Robert De Niro Double Feature (Casino / The Deer Hunter) Review

This is a broad sweeping film, never summarizing too quickly for the audience, always allowing the story to unfold gradually for the observer. The film is extremely ambitious for it attempts to catch life for a young group of blue-collar steel workers as the celebrate a wedding and enlistment in the army to go to Vietnam, followed by scenes of terror and horror in Vietnam, followed by the return to the United States of some of these characters, and then the return to Vietnam for the film's primary protagonist to attempt to find and save an old friend. The steel mill town, in Pennsylvania, in which they all live and work, must be seen as an essential aspect of the film for we are gradually shown the interconnections and networks and relationships between all parties that truly make up a community. A community loses these men to Vietnam and a community absorbs two of them back.
There is so much content in the film it is actually hard to review. Because I want to discuss the complexity of theme and character in this review, some folks who don't want to learn too much about the plot should stop reading this review now. There is excellent character development that director Michael Cimino allows to flow naturally with an outstanding cast. Robert DeNiro, John Savage, Meryl Streep, Christopher Walken, and John Cazale were all in top form in perfect performances. The film does a better job of establishing sense of place and time that almost any other film I have ever seen. The Russian Orthodox wedding and reception was incredible at establishing time and place, at allowing the characters to reveal themselves to the viewers through their subtle movements and eye contact, at establishing a contrast against which Vietnam can be seen in all its harsh terror. The scenes of Vietnam, especially the hell on earth in Saigon when the United States was pulling out of the country, were terrifying.

Robert DeNiro plays a young man, Mike, who is a good and loyal friend but he is also self contained, self reliant, a different type of man than most. He is the classic hero for he is fun loving, loyal, athletic, but he proves his loyalty and heroism often in the film. He is willing to go into the jaws of death to seek his best friend and house mate, Nick. We often focus on the hero, for he is usually handsome and brave and takes great risks for the benefit of others. Mike is such a character. However, this film has a twist in it for his best friend Nick tries to be just as loyal and just as brave and does not measure up to the hero. It is Mike who figures out a way to escape from the POW pits and Nick follows. It is Mike who voluntarily falls back into the river when Steve falls from the helicopter back into the river. Nick struggles to help his friends but he is rescued and they are not. How does one deal with the fact that they are always number 2 when compared to their exceptional best friend, especially if events appear to show that one friend failed to save another? Nick tests himself in the worst possible way for he tries to repeat the horror he experienced in the POW cages, hoping this time to emerge fearless, to finally win, to finally become the heroic man that he sees in Mike. Christopher Walken is at his very best playing this character of Nick, a man that literally seeks the horror he once experienced in an attempt to overcome that horror. But the horror eats human souls. This was a powerful storyline about war, torture, and the way that torture destroys many of its victims for the rest of their lives.
The character of Steve, played perfectly by John Savage, offers a contrast to Nick. For Steve is wounded in body and soul but it is Mike that is able to pull him back into the lives of the living. The character of Linda, played by Meryl Streep, is complex for she must reconcile her grief over the loss of her relationship with Nick with her controlled attraction to Mike. Her honesty and transparency were amazing, making her regal in the role of a check-out clerk in a grocery store.
The film is now 31 years old and expresses a time that was 41 years ago. Yet it captures a realistic time in our history. It tells a compelling story of bravery and sacrifice. It has complex three dimensional characters. It attempts to achieve greatness through a sweeping and tragic story that is as powerful today as it was 30 years ago.

Sharpe's Challenge Worthy Return

After a ten year break, the BBC returned to its Napoleonic series Sharpe in 2006 with Sharpe's Challenge. Based on the novels by Bernard Cornwell, this special two part episode is slim on premise but big on action and exotic locales.

Five years after Waterloo, Richard Sharpe (Sean Bean) is now alone on his farm in Normandy after his French lover's death. He is suddenly summoned to England by Lord Wellington (Hugh Fraser), and at first declines the chance to put down an uprising in India. Wellington's first agent in India, horse trader Patrick Harper (Daragh O'Malley), however, has gone missing. Sharpe finds Harper once he reaches India, and together they must rescue damsels in distress and overthrow corrupt Indian warlords.

Sharpe's Challenge is an awkward tale to summarize. On one hand its moving forward, taking place after Waterloo, but it is a composite of Cornwall's early Sharpe novels Tiger, Triumph, and Fortress. This mix of the two time periods automatically sets Challenge up for conflicting story points and even anger from die hard fans. If Sharpe's lover Lucille is dead, long time writer Russell Lewis and director Tom Clegg have erased two of Sharpe's children. Oops. Now that I've gone back to read Sharpe's Tiger I can see where pieces have appeared in Challenge. Its strange to read about Private Sharpe under Sergeant Hakeswill in Tiger when Challenge merely gives us a briefly red coated and pony tailed Bean. Could the powers that be have made a full length trilogy with some new young folk as Sharpe? Bean is no spring chicken, but in this day of reimagings and remakes I'm glad the production has stuck with its fans.

Challenge brings back all of our old Sharpe favorites. It's great that everyone was willing to come back and storylines were made to accommodate Wellington, the decrepit Simmerson (Michael Cochrane), even Ramona. There's a few snafus regarding characters who were killed earlier in the series that are somehow alive and well here, and Sergeant Bickerstaff is clearly a poor man's Hakeswill. Sean Bean however, is on form, and the reunion with Daragh O'Malley makes Challenge. The guest stars for Sharpe's Challenge seem more high end than the series of old. Padme Lakshmi (Now of Top Chef who I knew from her dreadful guest spot on Enterprise) is perfectly cast as the icy and exotic Madhuvanthi. I did however expect more from Toby Stephens (Robin Hood, Die Another Day) He just grimaces and pursues his lips a lot and says kinky things. I imagine some British gals find this very pretty, but we've seen better, uglier and nastier villains in Sharpe.

Challenge does give us something we haven't seen in Sharpe before: India. Despite the story's confusions, India was by far the best move for Challenge and future Sharpe productions. Some of the battles seem dusty and small scale, almost like the first film Sharpe's Rifles where the logistics were still being figured out. On the whole, however, the cultural changes, use of native scenery, historical sites, and local extras give Challenge an extra flair. I'm not sure how accurate the ladies' costumes are to the period, but they are very bright in what has been a somewhat dark and drab series. And they show some skin, always important for male viewers! At last it seems that technology has finally caught up to the fun stories and action Sharpe has told. Challenge looks so big, bright, and epic. I'm glad this episode is longer than the previous ninety minute installments. The look and excitement of Challenge tell us there's still fuel left in Sharpe's engine.

And shocker of shockers what does my Sharpe's Challenge DVD have? Extras, by golly I kid you not! Although the behind the scenes feature has a silly, aloof focus on an Indian extra's quest to meet Sean Bean, these long awaited insights into the Sharpe series are more than welcome. Fight choreography, interviews with Cornwell and the cast, humorous on set moments. Not all of it is stellar material, but after fourteen Sharpe movies with no extras, I'll take it! What else am I loving on my Sharpe's Challenge DVD? The bloopers? The photo gallery? No, the subtitles!

Sharpe's Challenge is a must for Sean Bean fans and Sharpe collectors. You're complete collection is now incomplete without it. Challenge may not be perfect, but the spirit of Sharpe is alive and well here. A new telefilm, Sharpe's Peril, is airing across the pond soon. Is Sharpe's Challenge the introductory film to a new Sharpe series? I hope so!

The cast, including Toby Stephens as Dodd, Michael Cochrane as the sneering Simmerson, the delightful Irish actor Daragh O'Malley as Sharpe's loyal sidekick, and the lovely Padma Lakshmi as a sultry force to be reckoned with, are uniformly strong. But it's Bean, with his world-weary demeanor and craggily handsome features, who commands this rollicking yarn. The film, shown on British television, was shot on location in glorious, dusty, romantic Rajasthan, India, and the whole effect is equal parts Raiders of the Lost Ark, Master and Commander, and the American TV hit House, with Bean wearing heroism and cynicism quite comfortably, thank you very much. Schindler's List Review

SPOILER ALERT - Don't read this if you don't want any spoilers!

This movie starts with a member of the SS party named Oskar Shindler. He has one purpose in life and that is to live richly. He takes advantage of the Jews lot in life under German rule to open a manufacturing facility.

This movie leaves nothing to the imagination and I suspect that is the way director Steven Spielberg wanted it. You see the coldness of it all. A man, and worker for Shindler, is shot in the head for having one arm. Shindler thinks of this more as a business man one worker lost and therefore one more to hire and train. It isn't until his workers are all driven to concentration camps that the reality of what is happening to the Jews really strikes Oskar.

The SS in this movie appear to have no heart. They don't view Jews as humans but rather as rodents. They think nothing of killing them, even the children. In the camps the Jews are humiliated by beatings and forced public nudity. They are shot "arbitrarily" as Oskar puts it. Such awful scenes led "some Jews to complain to God in anguish" (Fisher 275). Many Jews continued to hope for better times just as occured for the biblical Job. God allowed Satan to take everything from him, but he was rewarded for his suffering when God replaced everything. Their enduring hope was shown in the Jewish prayer recited in the beginning and end of the movie.

Throughout the movie Shindler moves to protect "his" Jews by listing them as "necessary workers". He tries through reasoning and cunning to save as many lives as possible even putting himself in harms way to do so. In the end Shindler saves 1000 Jews by enlisting them as workers. He allows and encourages them to engage in thier religious celebrations including allowing them to leave their jobs early on Friday to prepare for Passover. Passover is the Jewish Sabbath taking place "from sunset Friday night to sunset Saturday night, because the Jewish "day" begins with nightfall" (Fisher 277). Oskar's actions toward the end of this film show that some SS members did have a heart and that not all hopeful Jews would be let down.

The University district of Seattle is a great place to find almost everything from vintage clothing for the whole bubble tea at night, bookstores and a hell of a collection of rooms, cinema. It is essentially the fourth house of art and theater, with five cinemas within a radius of five blocks and four of them wants to show independent and foreign films. All the above, except one of the rooms below Landmark Cinemas, the name of a preview to get the gems aboveStates.

The Varsity - The Varsity, located opposite the university bookstore is home to more foreign films, her payroll, at least half of the film abroad. Edith, in history, a perspective quite often outdated and cheered on the war and his life. The story embodies the kind of charm and prestige that the World War 2 films represent, or have done. Of course, this story has tried to emphasize the war as good and necessary for the life of the community. Somehow, I can testify to support this, but this is an immediate conclusion. The author seems to frame the story revolves around thethe life of a couple.

Seemed almost as if he made an epic novel. His feelings and desires about the honor that was the war between the fans exciting and fascinating. For me the war to all the winners and losers was sent almost impossible that war brings. Come to think of it, the war, which have in the past, the terror and brought about the destruction occurred. I am personally convinced that war is never a necessaryreach a common goal.

A devout Christian, the conflict and struggle are among the subjects in the first place we want to abolish. It is sad to note, however, that the war can be avoided. Managed in the course of our history, a major war comes every 100 years in an attempt to use the system, change the world. Since these new superpower, the balance will shift and countries start to have conflicts. Sad as it may, the war takes place. Movies, books and other historyliterary continue to glorify their image, because people need an escape from reality, I think action movies or cartoons. We can not tolerate pain that war brings. It will hide more and more creative sources for us, our feelings about the war, but as I said before, is a sad fact of life.

The Bottom Line:

Salvador has a whole bunch of things wrong with it but the central character, as essayed by James Woods, is an absolutely fascinating character--a journalist with the ethos of a lovable con man--and the film manages to always be interesting even when its erratic pacing or on-again off-again plot threaten to sabotage the movie; it's not as polished as Oliver Stone's other 1986 film (the one that won Best Picture), but I guarantee the character of Richard Boyle will stay with you.

Director Oliver Stone (Platoon, JFK) offers up this brilliant, engrossing true-life account of the violent civil war in El Salvador as told through the perspective of a has-been journalist trying for one last grasp at glory and finding the true horror of war. James Woods is freelance journalist Richard Boyle, who leaves San Francisco broke with his drug-addled, disc-jockey buddy (Jim Belushi) to cover the escalating conflict and hopefully return to his former stature as a war correspondent. What he finds is a nation torn by random violence, shifting ideologies, poverty, and the malevolent influence of the United States. Boyle tries to make sense of the brutality he sees while extracting his girlfriend from the war zone and saving his own life. Featuring John Savage (The Deer Hunter) as an earnest photojournalist, this is a fascinating and riveting depiction of the bloody strife that tore apart a nation and mirrored the disillusionment of the Vietnam era. --Robert Lane

Sharpe's Mission Review

"Sharpe's Mission" starts with a flashback early in Wellington's Peninsula campaign where then Captain Sharpe (Sean Bean) and another officer named Brand (Mark Strong) encounter a French patrol. The French are holding a wounded British lieutenant and torturing him. Sharpe is going to rush the position but Brand goes instead. However, once Brand reaches the French they slip away and he shoots the lieutenant, bringing the body back to the other British troops. Because of his "heroism," as reported by Sharpe, Brand is promoted. The ruse has put a French spy into position in Wellington's army.

When we come to the present Major Sharpe is ordered to go behind French lines with a detachment commanded by Colonel Brand to destroy an ammunitions dump. On the other side the French want Brand to set a trap to capture Major General Ross (James Laurenson) and have another "ruse de guerre" to help with that plan. Meanwhile, Sharpe and Patrick Harper (Daragh O'Malley) are having similar problems with their brides. Jane Sharpe (Abigail Cruttenden), weary of being a military wife, is enjoying the attentions of a poet who has gone to make drawings of the war. Ramona Harper (Diana Perez) is made at her husband, who is paying too much attention to the gypsy girls visiting the camp, and is the target of the unwanted affections of Shellington (Warren Saire), a sergeant who is Brand's right-hand man.

The gypsies also introduce us to one of the more interesting supporting characters in the series. Major Pyecroft (Nigel Betts) is an explosions expert who weathers a leather hood because of a fuse that was cut too short. When Brand and Shellington, wearing their own masks, slaughter a young gypsy girl's parents, he helps her bury them and makes himself her protector. Pyecroft and Ross are old friends, but the "accident" has come between them, and the Major is not happy with being assigned to this particular mission. Brand, hearing that the gypsy girl escaped, is out to silence the one witness who can tie him to the murders. Then there is the mission to capture the French fort and destroy the ammunition before the French troops show up in force, which involves a couple of nice moments when Sharpe convinces the foot to surrender and gives Brand's men a way to end their military careers honorably.

This eleventh film in the Sharpe series has an original screenplay by Charles Wood based on the Bernard Cornwell Sharpe novels (one of two in the series). The fact that this is an original story and not an adaptation undoubtedly explains why for once in the series the villains enjoy an appropriate comeuppance at the hands of Sharpe and his Chosen Men. Sharpe actually deals with Brand, Harper gets to pay back Shellington, and it is Coporal Harris (Jason Salkey) who fixes the wagon of the poet wooing Jane. The fight between Harper and Shellington is one of the better choreographed fights in the series (with a neat setting) and I especially like the way Sharpe and Harris dispatch their targets. This might not be the way Cornwell would have done it, but for once it is great to just indulge in pointed victories.

The movie is based on a real story. During WWII, the British tried to fool the Nazis about the places and times of the Allied invasions. The deception about the invasion in Normandy is told in Eye of the Needle and the deception about the invasion of Sicily is the subject of this film. The idea is to let the Germans discover the body of a courier carrying false letters. Stephen Boyd, a fantastic actor who died very young plays the dangerous and seducing Irish spy trying to verify if the story is authentic. A fantastic and bizarre movie.

A real beauty of a true story provides the basis for The Man Who Never Was, a gripping World War II picture that has no combat scenes, no great vistas of troops. The time is 1943, as the Allies prepare the invasion of Sicily and desperately need a diversionary ploy to make the Germans suspect another invasion target. The solution is simple but ingenious: a dead man's body will be left in the sea to float ashore on the coast of Spain; made to look like a British pilot, he will be carrying papers suggesting an Allied attack on Greece. When the papers fall to the Nazis, they'll swallow the bogus story…or will they? Clifton Webb gives a crisp, disciplined performance as Ewen Montagu, the officer in charge of the scheme. The film errs only in some melodrama involving Gloria Grahame, the histrionic roommate of an Intelligence worker. Other than that, director Ronald Neame brings his steady, classy approach to bear on a good yarn, and saves special grace for the treatment of the unfortunate dead man who unwittingly loaned his body to a stunt that saved hundreds, if not thousands, of lives. The film's final haunting shots capture the ethereal shiver of its title. --Robert Horton

If "The Outlaw" came to our city, we sneak out of us to see them. Wow

The Small Back Room Review

Sammy Rice (David Farrar) is a first-rate scientist and something of an expert in defusing bombs. The year is 1943 and the Germans have starting dropping a new kind of terror weapon on Britain. It's something small, evidently attractive to children, and explodes either when it's picked up or just touched. No one is sure because the three children and one adult who did touch the things were killed. Rice is asked to investigate by the Army. He says he has to have an unexploded device to work on; that he'll come as soon as the Army calls him. Rice, it happens, has also lost his foot and wears a metal one. He suffers pain from it and is well into a self-pitying meltdown fueled by alcohol. Susan (Kathleen Byron), the woman who loves him, understands what he's going through but sooner or later will have enough of his self-involvement. "Sue, you'd have such a good life without me," he tells her in a nightclub. "I take things from you with both hands. I always have. I always will."

Sammy Rice has to deal with his self-imposed isolation, his drinking and his unwillingness to face up to the fact that he has an artificial foot. Through all this, the group of scientists and managers Rice works with has come up with an anti-tank gun some feel is ready to sell to the government. He doesn't, but he's not willing to go against the consensus. Then, deep in an alcoholic haze, he gets the phone call. Two devices have been discovered. One is now being worked on by the Army captain who first asked him to help. It probably goes without saying that soon there is no Army captain and only one remaining device. Rice leaves for the English coast where the device is half buried in the sand. What he does with it will determine not only his life, but will affect his whole outlook on himself, his worth and his willingness to accept responsibility.

Sound a little...well, too much? The Small Back Room features some very good acting, excellent dialogue, one of Michael Powell's quirky internal surrealistic scenes (as Rice fights his compulsion to have a drink) and an extremely well-handled and tense final twenty-five minutes as Rice works to defuse the bomb. On the whole, though, it seems to me that Powell and Pressburger, after such a run of great movies they created in the Forties, used The Small Back Room as a way to step back and let out a long breath. The movie is by no means a let-down, but the sulky self-pity of Sammy Rice leaves little room for us to get willingly involved with him. This is a problem because the movie, despite an exciting premise with the new-type of German bomb and the excitement of the last third of the film, is essentially a character study in Rice's self-pity. Sammy Rice starts out gloomy and unhappy, and he stays that way throughout the movie until he walks across the sand to see if he can defuse the bomb. Powell and Pressburger's subversive humor (a dolt of a governmental minister, a glad-handing arms manager) is amusing but we still wind up with Rice feeling sorry for himself.

I think it's fair to say that The Small Back Room marks the coming decline of Powell and Pressburger. The Tales of Hoffmann was still to be made, but with that exception every movie following The Small Back Room marked a decline in the kind of original, unusual cinematic storytelling that was the hallmark of The Archers. They had to deal with studio moneymen who gradually assumed control over the freedom that they had enjoyed with J. Arthur Rank and Alexander Korda. They, especially Powell, found it increasingly difficult to find subject matter that excited them. At one point, four years elapsed before they took on a new project. The Archers last movie turned out to be something Powell swore he'd never make after all those Quota Quickies in the Thirties, a programmer. They drifted apart, still friends, and went their own ways.

For those who admire Powell and Pressburger, The Small Back Room is well worth having. In addition to Farrar and Byron, both of whom were in Black Narcissus, there are a number of fine actors to enjoy, such as Jack Hawkins, Cyril Cusack, Sid James, Leslie Banks, Michael Gough, Robert Morley and Renee Asherson.

This Criterion release has an excellent DVD transfer. I only sampled the extras, which include a booklet essay, a commentary, a video interview with Christopher Challis who worked with Powell and Pressburger on several of their movies, and an audio excerpt of Powell's dictations for his autobiography. If you haven't bought the two volumes yet, I think you'll find A Life in Movies: An Autobiography and Million Dollar Movie great reading.

Thank goodness for DVD and for Criterion. Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger are no more, but we have their greatest films still with us. Says Challis, "It was a great team and I'm terribly sorry it packed up."

Thierry Guillo "loulou05" is incorrect. I have not seen the other movies in this set (yet), but Guys & Dolls and A Hole in the Head are very much musicals! Frank Sinatra does sing in A Hole in the Head, including the popular "High Hopes." He also sings "All My Tomorrows" in this movie. In Guys & Dolls, Sinatra sings the title song as well as "Adelaide," "Sue Me," and the crap game song in the barbershop. Marlon Brando does a lot of singing in Guys & Dolls, too, and the horse race song sung by the characters Nicely, Benny, and Charlie is so catchy it will stay in your head for days! Movies don't get much more musical than Guys & Dolls! This set looks like a great deal & I plan to try it soon!

Five Sinatra movies are boxed in this set, culled from his biggest era as movie star. There are no Rat Pack movies here, nor the early croonings of the bobby-soxer's dreamboat, rather a look at how Sinatra chose to spend his most powerful years as a box-office draw. There's just one bona fide classic in the bunch, The Manchurian Candidate, although Guys and Dolls is an awfully fun picture. Not many extra features for this box, although Manchurian Candidate has the good supporting stuff from its regular disc.

1962's Manchurian Candidate, directed by John Frankenheimer from a crackerjack novel by Richard Condon, is simply one of the essential American films of the 1960s, and a gnawing cry of discontent that sounds more clearly with each passing year. Sinatra and Laurence Harvey are ex-Korean War POWs with a shared nightmare, but only Harvey has a purpose: he's a lethal political weapon. Frankenheimer's direction is brilliant, capturing the feel of the early TV age, and the film is blackly, weirdly funny. Sinatra gives maybe his greatest performance, but Angela Lansbury nearly steals the movie as Harvey's mother.

Guys and Dolls (1955) is adapted from one of the finest of Broadway musicals, so you can understand why director Joseph Mankiewicz (All About Eve) fell in love with the Damon Runyon characters and the stylized milieu of sharpies and dames. Sinatra makes perfect sense as Nathan Detroit, and Vivian Blaine repeats her show-stopping stage role as Adelaide, but Mankiewicz perversely cast two non-singers in the leads: Marlon Brando as high-roller Sky Masterson, and Jean Simmons as Salvation Army lass Sarah Brown. Neither is a belter, but they do bring something gentle to their roles. The whole thing is overdone, but the marvelous music holds up.

The Pride and the Passion (1957) puts Sinatra in one of his most embarrassing roles, a Spanish fighter in the age of Napoleon, shepherding a giant cannon with the help of a British military man (Cary Grant). The boys share a mistress, Sophia Loren. This madness was directed by Stanley Kramer, who somehow let Sinatra do a Spanish accent, complete with rolled "r"s. Amazingly, it was one of the ten biggest grossing films of its year.

An even odder curio is Delmer Daves's Kings Go Forth (1958), with Sinatra and Tony Curtis as WWII soldiers competing for the attention of Natalie Wood, who has a secret that will affect the way they see her. It comes from Hollywood's era of "topic" movies, but simply doesn't gain much traction--the only character not Representing Something is Sinatra's tender portrait of a soldier at loose ends.

Finally, Frank Capra's A Hole in the Head (1959) gives Sinatra the kind of lovable rogue part he could knock off without breaking a sweat. He's a Miami widower with a son and some big dreams… you might even call them "high hopes." Yes, that Oscar-winning song comes from this movie, with Frankie and child star Eddie Hodges providing the vocals. If the movie isn't quite a Capra classic (he'd been out of film for a few years before this, and would make only one more feature after it), it fits neatly into the "family film" format. How important is cleaning your Civil War uniform?

The Daily Confederate or Union soldier's uniform was never really to be washed. They were so fast that many of them were never cleaned - ever.

This leaves us with the question --

Do you really need to wash or chemically clean your Civil War uniform?

Some reasons for cleaning may be a uniform

1. To prevent it, that the feeling really bad.

(Some hardcore reenactors feel thatreal evil is really part of the myth?
What do you have about a smell "authentic?)

2. To ensure that chemicals destroy to another institution, which can accommodate single or acquire, such as perspiration, body oil, the integrity of the tissue.

Rage of the Wind Review

During the time of the Japanese invasion, Yasuaki Kurata stars as a Japanese who has taken control of a small fishing town. Pretty basic story here, but well done. Chen Sing plays the hero, and his wife is played by Irene Ryder, an American. He went to America and became a boxer, but after killing a man he has decided to give up boxing and move back to his home town in China. Now he has to stop the Japanese and that's as far as the story goes. Some great fights at the end make this worth watching. Kurata and Chen Sing made a lot of movies together, and this is one of their best. The final fight on the beach is just about as good as basher action gets. Yukio Someno has a great role playing Kurata's top man, and Jimmy Lee and Bruce Leung Siu Lung have an awesome cameo where they show up to fight Kurata. Kurata- "what do you want with me?" Jimmy Lee- "TO KILL YOU!!!".

The MASH ensemble had such great interaction during those first 3 wonderful seasons and I still get a feeling of dread when I see the final episode with Henry and Trapper coming on. I tried watching some of the following seasons but it just wasn't the same without Henry and Trap and then my favorite, Frank Burns left. I had only been an occasional viewer until that moment, but that ended it for me. Plus the show was no longer very funny. I still laugh out loud at the first 3 seasons but really have no use for the rest.

Innocent Voices Review

I live in an area of the US with many immigrants from El Salvador. I have a childhood friend who disappeared in El Salvador in the 1970's. I know virtually nothing about the history of the country or the people, but through INNOCENT VOICES, I have learned much. I recognized many faces, not because I know the actors, but because I see from their faces the people who experienced the civil war of their time in their country. I feel naive about my limited historical knowledge, but I can address the filmmaking, which I think is superb. I often say that children are magic on-screen and they are so unpredictable and pliable with a good director. The children in this film (as well as the adults) are worth studying by young actors because they appear to lose themselves in their characters. The language spoken of course is Spanish with English subtitles that were very well done. The lush wooded locale was captured beautifully and the devastation caused by the armies was done by a first rate special effects team. The wardrobe was outstanding and set design very realistic. Mid-way through the film, I felt the pacing slow down a bit, but the film still held my interest throughout. The characters were very well done and full bodied, so many creating a strong impression. I consider this an historical film which brought to light a time which changed many lives and the landscape, so I now see survivors of the time from my more enlightened eyes. For a well made film that will motivate you to think about war, love, family, resistance and survival, try INNOCENT VOICES.

Andersonville Review

I have always been a fan of John Frankenheimer, and though his later efforts were not critically well-received, I believe it may be time for a reappraisal. I suggest Andersonville as a starting point.

I watched this film twice, before watching it again with Frankenheimer's commentary. It was like watching another movie. Listening to John (sadly, now deceased) discuss these young actors, and how he set up some of the shots -- many involving thousands of extras -- I came to deeply respect both John and this film.

Bear in mind that they had only sixty days to shoot this, and on a limited budget (and they lost several canisters of completed film and had to reassemble the cast and rebuild the set 9 months later!), and you come away deeply impressed with the artistry and efforts of all involved, particularly the costume and makeup folks who worked on this picture.

As John says, this film is not about war, but more about man's willingness to endure anything to survive. Several of the large-scene fight sequences are astonishing, as is the trial scene that vindicates and upholds the rule of law even in horrific conditions.

For me that is something that resonates and is instructive even today.

Zapatista Review

I could write a long review, but I won't. The day of the Zapatista uprising says it all. The day NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) came in to effect - some celebrated, these impoverished and brave indigenous people took up arms to make a point, force change, and make their voice heard.

What can you learn from men wearing black hoods to mask their identities, a fair bit.

People the world over have forgotten, there is no such thing as a free lunch. 'Free trade' is what I call - lipstick on a pig.

I recommend the following other DVDs: The Persuaders, Orwell Rolls in his Grave, Charcoal People, National Geographic Strange Days on Planet Earth, Life and Debt, a skeptical watching of Commanding Heights, and National Graphic's Taboo Season 1 and 2. The latter I recommend watching to realize that not everyone wants to live your lifestyle and people can have very different opinions on how to live. Then if you haven't, go travel abroad.

As for books - Native Wisdom for White Minds.

World War II: Payoff in the Pacific Review

The war in the Pacific has always been overshadowed by the war against Hitler in Europe, and it really should not be. I would have gladly chosen to take on the elite of the German Wehrmacht and S.S. before I would have signed on to take the war to Japanese soldiers. The Japanese were tough as nails; they gave no quarter and fought on long after most soldiers would have surrendered. They also enjoyed a home field advantage of sorts, as the American military had never fought a campaign against island chains full of jungles and the tropical diseases that thrive there. The story of America's war against Japan is really quite amazing and should be heralded as such. Much intense fighting took place between the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as this video makes clear.

Indeed, Payoff in the Pacific begins with the sneak attack on the Pacific fleet and takes the viewer all the way through the Japanese surrender. Long before the D-Day invasion of Normandy, American soldiers were storming beaches all across the Pacific. In the days and months following December 7,1941, Japan all but established its supremacy in the region. It would take time for the U.S. to rebuild the Pacific fleet and get new recruits ready to fight, but even in 1942 U.S. soldiers were fighting the Japanese in places such as Papua and the Solomon Islands. This video basically takes you through the American advance toward Japan, island by island, featuring impressive and telling footage of the battles - you don't get a lot of detail about each battle, but the big picture comes through loud and clear. At first, the Americans basically tried to hold back the Japanese advance, losing many islands in the process. As the new army took shape, however, the tide slowly began to turn. Long and deadly fights such as the battle for Guadalcanal (which took six months) evolved into shorter and less deadly battles as the U.S. forces began to go on the offensive. By summer 1944, the Americans were ready to take back the Philippines, and it is here that Japanese defeat became all but inevitable. A vicious two-day naval battle in the Gulf of Leyte essentially broke the Japanese navy's back, and by early 1945 the army had taken Okinawa (albeit with heavy losses) to land itself on the proverbial doorstep of Japan. It was at that time that the Enola Gay made her way into the history books with the dropping of an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. After Nagasaki fell prey to a second atomic bomb, the Japanese were compelled to surrender.

The video doesn't stop at the signing of surrender papers, however. It offers a significant glimpse at how quickly American troops went to work rebuilding the infrastructure of the nation they had just defeated. Not only did this pave the way for a new friendship between these two formerly antagonistic nations, it highlights the character of the men and women who made up the Greatest Generation of Americans. This video was released officially by the U.S. Army, but I don't consider it propagandistic - it may be one-sided in its approach, but this is an American film about an American victory.

At War with the Army Review

"At War With The Army", Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis' first starring feature (after 2 plum supporting roles in "My Friend Irma" and the sequel "My Friend Irma Goes West"), is clearly an excuse to see if this new comedy duo can carry a picture. And why not start them off in a service comedy? Look what "Buck Privates" did for Abbott & Costello!
AWWTA is based on a stage play, and really looks it. With the exception of a few outdoor scenes, most of the film is very "stagebound" as the characters occupy a handful of set pieces, and Martin & Lewis are obliged to share their screen time with a wide assortment of characters. Strangely enough, Martin & Lewis do not seem to be intentionally paired as a team here, since their characters only cavort in a few scenes together. One of the "convincers" that they are a team is the "Service Show" scene, obviously a holdover from their nightclub act. The problem is that their 2 characters are mostly at odds with each other, since one is Sargeant (Martin) while the other is a lowly Private (Lewis). Dean sings his songs as smoothly as he does in future movies, while Jerry sings a cute, funny novelty number that "The Navy Gets the Gravy While the Army Gets the Beans", and does a curious turn in drag singing a French accent, and mugging it up.
The film has a sort of "B-movie" feel to it, mostly because it was produced by someone else, and not Hal Wallis, who would give such polish & style to their following films. The DVD interpretation here is scratchy, dark & blurred in spots, but still viewable.
Although not their best by any means, AWWTA was a big hit when it first debuted, and was an indication that the best from Martin & Lewis was still to come.

The Pride and the Passion Review

Stanley Kramer's "The Pride and the Passion" certainly deserves the pans it has received over the years; often sluggish, miscast in both male leads (Cary Grant never looked comfortable in 'period' films, and Frank Sinatra's Spanish accent is as bogus as his 'peasant' hairpiece), and only rarely capturing any sense of the Napoleonic era in Spain.

But there are aspects that do shine, and make the film worthwhile; the film score (by George Antheil) echoes "Bolero", and combines romantic and militaristic themes quite effectively; the sheer spectacle of an army of extras against the visual splendor of the Spanish countryside; the climactic assault on French-occupied Ávila (the giant cannon, when finally fired, does NOT disappoint); and young Sophia Loren, more exotic and untamed than in her later 'superstar' period, here oozing sheer sex appeal and heavy-lidded desire (little wonder why Grant fell madly in love with her!).

The backstories about the production are legendary, from Grant's dogged pursuit of Loren (forcing Carlo Ponti to actually make a lasting commitment to her), to Sinatra's sulleness, as stories of Ava Gardner's wild indiscretions filled tabloids. Certainly the long location schedule and frequent delays, trying to manage thousands in key scenes, fueled the tension on the set. Yet little of this appears in the final film (even the Grant/Loren love scenes are surprisingly restrained).

I love individual moments; the final attack, of course (watch how quickly Grant leaps away the cannon each time he touches off the wick!), and Grant fulfilling Sinatra's dream; the holy pageant, as the disguised cannon passes the French garrison, unnoticed; the bullring sequence (even Sinatra's accent doesn't ruin it), as an entire town joins in to help pull the cannon. Individual scenes 'make' this film!

So I acknowledge the bad, but highly recommend the film for what it does succeed in. "The Pride and the Passion" is worth owning!

The Pride and the Passion Overview

During Napoleon's invasion of Spain, the fate of the Spanish partisans rests with an elaborate, magnificent, and extremely heavy cannon--which the French have lost. Despite the high-wattage star power on display, this gun is the true star of The Pride and the Passion, a massive Stanley Kramer production that employs vast swatches of the Spanish countryside (and a few thousand Spaniards). And the stars? Well, they're among the biggest of their day--the only problem is, they're miscast. Frank Sinatra plays the scruffy, illiterate partisan leader, Cary Grant the uptight British captain who covets the gun for his country, Sophia Loren the peasant woman shared by both men. It says something about these effortless stars that they all look extremely uncomfortable in this movie. Grant is robbed of his humor and thus awkward (although his marvelous athleticism is much on display), and Loren is badly made-up and stuck in nobility. Sinatra fares the worst, however, including a disastrous Spanish accent, complete with rolled "r"s. Physically, the movie's pretty impressive, with some eye-filling scenes of extras pushing the heavy cannon up hill and over dale; Franz Planer's cinematography is picturesque, except in some obvious studio inserts. One big draw: the mighty, Iberian-flavored music by George Antheil, one of the composer's best scores. But you'd better like the music and the cannon, because the rest of the film hovers between the tranquilizing and the cheesy. Amazingly, it was one of the top ten box-office films of its year. --Robert Horton

"MacArthur" has strong ponts and weak points.

Strong points:
1. Typically, Gregory Peck gives a great performance.
2. The screenplay for "MacArthur" follows a coherent timeline. The story doesn't jump around without explanation.
3. The relationship between MacArthur and Truman was accurately depicted.
4. The cinematography was excellent.
5. While the point of view is obviously sympathetic to MacArthur as a soldier, it does not portray the individual as a saint without fault.

Weak points:
1. Although the battle scenes were fairly well staged, at one point, some stock footage of a dive bomber dropping its load on target was inserted. The only problem is that the silhouetted airplane is an F4 Phantom, which wasn't put into service until the 1960's.
2. Truman's reasons for relieving MacArthur were not fully explained.
3. There was little mention of MacArthur's service prior to Corrigedor.
4. Although MacArthur was portrayed as having the final sayso in strategic operations concerning the Pacific Theater, it wasn't necessarily so.
5. Even though the film's intro alludes to the image of MacArthur as a controversial figure, the screenplay does not adequately follow up on this idea. Even though some light is thrown on his political ambition, MacArthur is portrayed for the most part as someone who, in some other dimension, could have been the CEO of some financial outfit. The MacArthur Peck portrays does not appear to be the rather ruthless individual that at times, MacArthur was.

I bought this film because one of the Marines in my unit was an extra in the Korean War sequence, which was filmed at least in part, at Camp Pendleton. He said he carried a BAR and I wanted to see if I could spot him. I could recognize Pendleton, but not the Gyrene.

Would I recommend "MacArthur" for viewing? Yes, but it's not something that I would want to watch again and again and again.

It all begins in a whirl of action in "Hope City" as a simple, but messy job performed by several hitmen to take out a minor league player in the city's organized crime scene turns into a desperate manhunt for one of their own. For reasons that become clear as the story develops, Ben Williams (Glen Savage) is deemed expendable by his employer, local crime boss Kincaid (Adam Chapman). Kincaid's top henchmen, a pair of cold-blooded maniacs named Dylan (Kevin Akehurst) and Taylor (Adrian Foiadelli) turn on their former associate. Wounded, Ben goes into hiding.

Meanwhile, a promising kickboxer named Danny Kelso (Andy Prior), whom Kincaid hopes to control, refuses to throw a fight. Taylor, his one-time friend breaks every one of his fingers and sends Danny into exile in a neighboring city. Over the next six months Danny recovers and revives his kickboxing career, while waiting for an opportunity to get revenge on Taylor.

Having uncovered the truth about why he first came to work for Kincaid, Ben shows up and convinces Danny to join him in returning to Hope City to take down not only Taylor, but Kincaid and his entire underworld empire.

I'd like to think that the only thing holding this film back is money or the lack thereof. The modest locations, lighting, sound, attempts at computerized bloodletting, and generally uneven art direction are all reminders that this is budget filmmaking. But the movie compensates for this in the areas the matter with heavy doses of gleeful carnage, serviceable acting and some fine direction and editing. The biggest problem with low budget actioners from inexperienced filmmakers is usually pacing. Writer/director Ross Boyask and his crew nail this down with few hitches. The movie flies by as the viewer is thrust into one ugly brawl after another. The movie may move a little too fast at times, but fans of Hong Kong cinema will feel right at home.

The opening sets the tone. It's a long and violent action sequence that begins as a shootout and transforms into a martial arts brawl with swords, fists and feet mincing bodies. It's not the best action sequence in the film and is marred by some discordant editing that makes it look more like a highlight reel. This choppy look returns towards the end as Ben and Danny storm Kincaid's headquarters. My opinion is that they left too much in and should have pared both sequences down to their essentials.

Once done with the extended opener, the film settles more comfortably into its crime genre leanings by fleshing out the story and characters. Unlike most action movies shot at this level, I actually took an honest interest in the story and found the characters, although somewhat derivative, enjoyable to watch. Reminiscent of Robert Carlyle, as the explosive Begbie in Trainspotting, Adrian Foiadelli makes the most of his killer-gone-over-the-edge persona. His final scene in the film is very nicely done. As his partner in crime, Kevin Akehurst isn't quite as convincing in his role, but handles his dialogue well. He also gets to share in one of the film's better stand-alone fight sequences when he faces off against Glen Savage on a rooftop with sword in hand. Savage is a great choice for the film's slow-boiling lead. He's got everyman looks and an unpretentious manner that is wholly believable when cast as someone who means business. There's also something in his eyes that speaks volumes. I'm glad to see that he's continuing to star in subsequent UK actioners such as The Silencer and Boyask's Devil's Run.

One disappointment story-wise, is the confusing introduction of an attractive platinum blonde during a montage sequence. She appears to be Ben's replacement as one of Kincaid's newest fighters. We get a scintillatingly short fight towards the end between her and Ben where she shows off some uniquely-acrobatic fighting skills. But there's no character development of any kind to give her fight any meaning.

A lot of work obviously went into the martial arts sequences in this film, which were put together and shot with members of several British stunt teams including First Strike Action Team, Independent Stunts and Screenfighter UK. The types of combat used are varied, but dominated by high kicking. Personally, I have a problem with high kicking put to use in a supposedly gritty crime film as many self-defense practitioners would probably agree that throwing your leg up above the waist leaves you wide open to a world of hurt. But, as Hong Kong producer Ng See-yuen discovered with The Secret Rivals (1976), leg fighting onscreen sells because it looks good. Andy Prior gets the lion's share of leg work to perform as the kickboxing hero, both in the ring and out. He's not the next Hwang Jang-lee, but he's alright.

Genre fans should appreciate some of the more creative aspects of the fight choreography that works its way into the film. Towards the end, some tandem fighting appears as two stunt actors coordinate their attacks against Prior. Viewers will also witness the use of locks, takedowns and good old fashioned kung fu sparring. There's even some gory Street Fighter-type bodily alterations performed on opponents. With the sheer volume of fighting that takes place in the movie, the stunt teams are able to work in quite a bit of variety. Even so, this starts to work against them, for the action scenes linger long enough to begin to lose their "punch." The amount or fighting isn't the real problem here. It's just limited clarity, dynamics and the ability to manipulate the scenes for full dramatic impact, all of which tend to come with experience on everyone's part.

Although not without faults, I've got to hand it to the folks behind Left for Dead. They've created a monster of an action movie considering their limited means. Most importantly, they've managed to make the most out of their medium, the indie film, by pushing the action to extremes while maintaining an engaging plot. Left for Dead is like a modern, British equivalent of a Shinji Fukazaku yakuza thriller and classic Hong Kong kung fu movie in one, where the violence is intense and the fighting practically never stops.

Gideon (Pierce Brosnan) is a former general in the Civil War. He blamed the atrocities that he deeply regrets and sought refuge or reactions from other people, high in the mountains of New Mexico. During the campfire somebody shoots at him and a bullet hit his shoulder. Without knowing where the bullet came from countries or who might follow him, he runs.

Carver (Liam Neeson) is the manbehind the gun. He asked a group of questionable basis to monitor and intercept Gideon vivo. Nobody knows why Carver Gideon wants so badly, but it's well paid, so it must be good.

This happens all the time. Volunteers give their time for money, and some that is without thinking about whether what they are doing right or wrong, as they do their duty, or service of their leader.

The opening is simply thrilling. Gideon was shot in the shoulder and can not meet itsPocket with the knife and the gold before it down the hill, so that behind his horse. Five men are on the right track for horses, and they know that there is no chance of escape, an accident, has, without a weapon or a horse. A man without a horse is a dead man in the mountains. Gideon tries to explore through a fallen tree with wild rapids below, but loses his grip, falls in a fast and taken to a waterfall. After a long fall, go up the river, the gelDeath. One can say that Seraphim Falls is the Western tradition in a good way, like 3:10 to Yuma (2007) and The Proposition (2005). Seems a big West every year. It makes me happy.

Westerns are often stories of these mythical characters larger than life,live and die by the gun. These characters are increasingly confronted with the great ethical questions, and the largest Western are in a position to show how these dilemmas can be resolved without only the fastest gun, but with a stronger character of N 'Whatever ball which the fate of the whole, can change to do exactly the right thing.

It's fun to see Pierce Brosnan and Liam Neeson in good shape. Brosnan seems to have been freed from a straitjacket, because they no longerhave of James Bond, his characters vivid and entertaining than ever before. It "was just as well in The Matador (2005) and became stronger than ever. Liam Neeson is always great. Now she plays a more interesting that we saw play for a long time, especially as a reminder of a super hero, Darkman ( 1990) run.

If you want to make a lot of money at the box office, there are some problems that have gold mines. Buddy comedies always seem to do well, as romantic comedies. Big historical epics are a bit "risky happen, but if the right can pay huge dividends. Another type of video that can be difficult to create, but has a very broad audience is a war movie. Whether on the belief that general, or it has been said to be founded by family doctors dressed in clothing from Scrubs war Movies> are fertile ground for all sorts of topics. Sometimes the film has almost no talk of a war at all, the setting is enough to create a story. Other times, there is not much in the history and the struggle has a central position. However, war films of all kinds of great public and those who have served in the armed forces, history buffs, and interested in a film about an event to remember the passwords that life.

Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds Movie Review

For any of you who waited to go with an updated, large budgets to serious Hollywood alien invasion flick, especially after it terribly disappointed with the mud that was "Independence Day", you will be with "War of the Worlds pleased" the retelling of the HG Wells classic. Director Steven Spielberg, worth noting that it gives us more warm and fuzzy aliens decide in his films to go in the opposite direction, not only for themselves but with the aforementioned "IndependenceDay by almost the exact opposite of what this film will be reached (or destroyed), depending on perspective. The aliens are threatening the scenes of destruction really frightening, the characters are more rooted in reality, and despite the picture quality to the opening and closing scenes, this movie delivers a solid story with credible and operational sequences that will surprise and frighten you.

The opening sequence, where the stands literally explode out of theGround and then start zapping everyone is made of one of the most terrible consequences on the screen. Perhaps the idea, since in the ground for one million years and none of us noticed stretches credibility a bit, but it does not really matter because it is staged so wonderful that you will forget this point. Spielberg pulls himself deliberately to the post 9 / 11 experience, showing a scene of destruction in the not too dissimiliar from the scenes of people fleeing from the rubble of the collapsing Twin TowersNew York after the terrorist attacks. Another sequence later in the movie where an alien tripod is destroyed from the water by ferry is very exciting and pound the constant threat that people are at home, be destroyed, and there is no escape. And perhaps one of the darkest scenes in a Spielberg film, we see someone pinned to the ground by one of the stands and have the blood sucked out of him.

One of the interesting topics that through this film is the idea thatPeople actually on themselves to survive. It is very pessimistic about a film like this, but also very realistic. One sequence, where people are fighting in a car, with Tom Cruise and his family hold almost always shot at the car, is worrying. After they escape, we see the man who shot the car through the crowd flooded the car. It is this kind of madness, egotistical, the worst that can define the properties in humans.

The film is also concerned with the ideaof a refugee situation which occurred in a large western society like America. There is some attempt by Spielberg to present them, especially in many scenes where we see homeless people and different people walking across the landscape, the terror brought them to flee.

It was a bold move by Spielberg is set to one third of the film in the basement of a man, but there is actually a study in human reactions to survive in a crisis. Enter Tim Robbins, which gives a harrowing performance as a man whoThe waiting his time before he again struggles against the invaders. It is an insane lack of credibility behind his thinking, coming on top in a scene in which Cruise to do with him in a morally questionable manner has, however, leads to the survival of him and his family.

Tom Cruise and co. not an amicable job as leads in the film, but overall it's not really a film in which you concentrate on the actors. You need only convey fear and their reactions to the extraordinary things thatare done with them.

The only negative about this film is the opening and closing scenes. Although it is linked to the earlier George Pal film, and is largely told by Morgan Freeman, they give the impression of a story book, which seems completely out of balance with the rest of the film. She adds that Spielberg touch of sentimentality that seems, despite its very low dose of place.

Some can be postponed by the anti-climax at the end, but there is no endShares with the original novel and the original George Pal version of the film. It's actually a whole lot of sense that nature would kill at the end of the aliens, because we really do not have the resources to allow us to have.

This is a great film that finally delivers a serious history of alien invasion.

The Great Ships - The Aircraft Carriers (History Channel) Review

I enjoyed the History Channel's subject on the origins of the aircraft carriers up to the present day. It was an eye opener also that some of the innovations of the modern US aircraft carriers were designed by the British. However, I noticed that the jeep carriers of World War 2 were not included and that although the Forrestal class was discussed at lenght, the Kitty Hawk and JFK class of aircraft carriers were not part of subject. The Enterprise is a class of its own and the Nimitz class ships were very detailed. I would have preferred though that the latest and most modern and recently commissioned Ronald Reagan included in the film. The LHAs and LHDs were also not brought out when one can see that they resemble the carriers, they still are by and large aircraft carriers. Otherwise, the documentary was very good and I look forward to other films about modern ships not only of the US but also with the former Soviet Union.

Iron Man Movie Review

BOTTOM LINE: This is a comic book movie than most of the rest of the cut, and despite highly predictable final act, this is an entertaining piece of popcorn with an excellent performance by Robert Downey Jr. and a few anti-war messages thrown in for a good measure.

THE GOOD: "Iron Man" does not quite have the reputation of other comic book superheroes like Superman, Batman or Spiderman, but he has a fascinating history in origin, that have played Tony Stark (with greatWit and charm of Robert Downey Jr.) is essentially a war profiteer who sees the light when he learns to get his weapons fall into the wrong hands, he decides to do something about it. In Afghanistan, captured, he manages to break free from his captivity to carry out the construction of an iron suit with weapons and abilities. On his return to America with plans to end production of weapons for his company, partner Obadiah Stone a very threatening Jeff Bridges) (has other ideas, the decisionto be found to make the secret behind Stark designs to deal with the ultimate soldier. Make no mistake, this is a comic-cast films, but somehow succeeds in some anti-war messages, especially in the very strong first act, where Tony sees firsthand how his life's work so much misery in the world causes. Robert Downey Jr. makes this movie really as good as it is, put it in an attractive, witty performance as Tony Stark. It is always exciting to watch, and depicts the carefree playboyextremely well. Jeff Bridges as the perfect stone, representation from the start to someone who you should not trust, and when he reveals himself, he's a nasty piece of work. Gwyneth Paltrow as Stark's assistant Pepper great, she is girly enough to be obvious love interest but not so girlie not strong in history. The design of the Iron Man is very cool, and there are some moments of fun, especially when Stark is testing the application before it is completed. "Iron Man" is aComic book movie with strong characters, concrete actions and a few important issues to him a few extra dimension compared to other lesser comic adaptations.

THE BAD: Once villain stone for what it reveals, and we give the last act of the film, things very predictable and essentially mimics the final acts of most superhero movies, where Iron Man meets his match found. After the stellar start, and come to really enjoy Robert Downey Jr., command the screen, theClimax of the film was a little disappointing, if only that the formula back, do not always offer less credible, and something new. I found myself tuning out to be perfectly honest, but then this kind of film has to have an end like this so I'm not sure if the filmmakers could have done no better. It is a pity, because the first three quarters of the film is very dedicated and unique (at least) for a comic book movie.

It's hard to imagine more compelling material than the backroom machinations between FDR, Winston Churchill, and Josef Stalin that led to the precarious alliance of these three leaders against Hitler. World War II--When Lions Roared is an unusual mixture of scenes dramatized from speeches and diplomatic correspondence and archival newsreel footage. The three main actors--John Lithgow (3rd Rock from the Sun, Kinsey) as Roosevelt, Bob Hoskins (Mrs. Henderson Presents, Mona Lisa) as Churchill, and Michael Caine (Alfie, The Quiet American) as Stalin--all deliver strong performances. Hoskins, even under heavy make-up, doesn't look much like Churchill, but he's got the man's gruff, stern cadences nailed. Caine's make-up is more effective, but the key to Caine's performance is in his mysterious, gimlet eyes. The script is oddly cobbled together from speeches and diplomatic correspondence and so thick with high-flown rhetoric and pontification, which certainly fits the mini-series' romantic view of WWII but can be a bit much to stomach after an hour or two of stirring declamation. When Lions Roared, as you might guess from the title, suffers from unapologetic hero worship of FDR and Churchill, presenting them as wise and resolute throughout, wily codgers the likes of which we shall not see again, etc.. Also strange are split-screen scenes of the leaders in their various lairs, from which they speak to each other as if in mid-conversation--obviously intended to depict the decision-making process economically, but the effect is uncomfortably chummy and glib. Nonetheless, history buffs will enjoy the wary regard in which these world leaders held each other as they negotiated the fate of the world. --Bret Fetzer

Comic books are published in America for almost 100 years, but they do not hit their stride until 1940, when characters like Superman and Batman introduced. Now, after more than 60 years, has become comic film clips of the summer movie season. This year saw the release of "Spider-Man 3", "(Fantastic Four 2" and "Ghost Rider" all on Marvel comic characters are based). I have always loved the John Wayne version of The Alamo. It is a great picture of part of our American history. I saw a bit of the newer version, and wasn't at all pleased with it. After viewing the dvd, I also ordered the cd of all the music from the film. I am very pleased with both and would recommend both for everyone.

Through the boredom and have nothing else to do, I have decided to make a movie marathon from me. I went to my room and entertainment selected 10 films that I love most. It took me 15 hours just watching them. Here are my top 10 greatest films are allTime. I started with:

1. The Goonies - a film that was directed in 1985 by Richard Donner and a story by Steven Spielberg from. A motley group of young outsiders are what they call the "Goonies" to. This "Goonies" were from the "Goon Docks" near Astoria, Oregon, began to go on an adventure, the treasure of One-Eyed Willie, a legendary pirate of the 17th Century will find in the hope of saving their homes from demolition.

2. Never Ending Story - is filming in 1984of the German fantasy novel by Michael Ende and the production was directed by Wolfgang Petersen.

Starring Barret Oliver as Bastian Balthazar Bux (named only "Bastian Bux" in the movie), Noah Hathaway as Atreyu, and Tami Stronach as the Childlike Empress.

The story began when Bastian started reading the book "The Never Ending Story". And began his adventure as he read the book started. In order to save "Fantasia," Bastian should build the entire world through wishes and againImagination.

3. Kids - 1995, an American film written by Harmony Korine and directed by Larry Clark. The film is based on a day in the life of a group of teenagers in New York City and Disturbing dark, concentrated low-budget film about young people growing up in poverty in New York City.

The film had great success in his homeland and won awards and recognition in foreign territories.

10. Amores Perros - is a Mexican film directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, in 2000. It is an anthology film, with three different stories that are connected by a road accident in Mexico City. Each of the three stories is a reflection on the cruelty of people together, show how they endLiving life as a dark and hideous dogs around them. The film was released under the Spanish title in the English-speaking world, although it was sometimes translated as Love's Bitch in marketing. Full Metal Jacket (Deluxe Edition) [Blu-ray] Review

This is a movie that I've viewed repeatedly over the years and still enjoy very much as it is strikingly genuine versus most Hollywood presentations of War. Having been drafted myself in 1969 and took an extra year to determine my vocational choice versus being dictated. Military was very different as there was no volunteer system yet - you found yourself serving next to teachers and engineers and other professionals because of the draft. The presentation of Boot Camp is so real in this movie and the Dufus that commits murder/suicide - there is one of these guys in every company that gets pushed and pushed and during war where you're losing hundreds weekly it's the DI's job to get them through not send them home.

I often found Platoon and Apocalypse nice to look at but found them insulting to GI's and unreal. The portrayal of Boot Camp and it's push to remove individualism at all costs for the TEAM was very real and the discipline enforced by the group in it's partnering in said discipline with blanket parties is genuine. Somebody screws up invariably and the group pays a price and the group then becomes the enforcer of TEAM.

The presentation of Vietnam experience matches pretty much exactly what everyone shared and also quite often a number of troops were killed due to simple mistakes - Charlie was a master of guerilla warfare and the war was a roaming battle zone that often had no boundaries. Vietnam had plenty of cheap sex, booze, smoke but younger people may never understand how great the casualty count was on both sides - we lost over 53,000 but the Vietnamese lost over a million. War is Hell and no real glory. This movie depicts it far better than any I've seen.

Part ONE the making of a Marine and Part TWO the reality of being (slogans don't mean jack when your in an ambush) - there's no a video game do over. While most of us that survived are now old farts, this movie brings home one's youth of the day and how overnight you can become the property of the US Govt and Holy Crap why am I in this friggin foreign land fighting for this hunk of dirt, swamp - we used to talk of what the hell would we win even if we could claim victory? A place to sell more coke and consumer goods?

Now, today I find myself buying goods like Canon Printers and a Jacket from a luxury store and candles from Target and they have imprinted Made in Vietnam on them. So we won without having to fight - money talks better than bullets!

For a reminder of what it's about especially when a draft is in place during national emergencies view this flick - God Bless our Troops in Iraq and may they leave that dust bowl (with OIL below) sooner than later and today I would ask the same damn question - If we could declare a Victory what the hell have we one? Nothing!!! The futility of War and the pawns of the soldiers that serve us and die for Jack too far often! I despise the waste of any Soldier! (Human Being) Enjoy the Movie for the reality it depicts despite the passing of time!

Stanley Kubrick's 1987, penultimate film seemed to a lot of people to be contrived and out of touch with the '80s vogue for such intensely realistic portrayals of the Vietnam War as Platoon and The Deer Hunter. Certainly, Kubrick gave audiences plenty of reason to wonder why he made the film at all: essentially a two-part drama that begins on a Parris Island boot camp for rookie Marines and abruptly switches to Vietnam (actually shot on sound stages and locations near London), Full Metal Jacket comes across as a series of self-contained chapters in a story whose logical and thematic development is oblique at best. Then again, much the same was said about Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, a masterwork both enthralled with and satiric about the future's role in the unfinished business of human evolution. In a way, Full Metal Jacket is the wholly grim counterpart of 2001. While the latter is a truly 1960s film, both wide-eyed and wary, about the intertwining of progress and isolation (ending in our redemption, finally, by death), Full Metal Jacket is a cynical, Reagan-era view of the 1960s' hunger for experience and consciousness that fulfilled itself in violence. Lee Ermey made film history as the Marine drill instructor whose ritualized debasement of men in the name of tribal uniformity creates its darkest angel in a murderous half-wit (Vincent D'Onofrio). Matthew Modine gives a smart and savvy performance as Private Joker, the clowning, military journalist who yearns to get away from the propaganda machine and know firsthand the horrific revelation of the front line. In Full Metal Jacket, depravity and fulfillment go hand in hand, and it's no wonder Kubrick kept his steely distance from the material to make the point. --Tom Keogh

Standard Operating Procedure Review

Standard Operating Procedure is an inexpensively made documentary of Americans who committed atrocities against people they were there to liberate instead of humiliate or obliterate. There are interviews with the cast of characters who participated in these degradations, including one sergeant who reported abuse, a chastened piece of trailer trash named Lynndie England, and Brigadier General (BG) Janis Karpinski. The most sickening part of all were the pictures of inmates forming pyramids and pictures of female soldiers smiling over a corpse, or another with a leash on a detainee. The music, effective, sets the mood for the viewer to open up a can of whoopas on some fellow Americans for their brutality and stupidity.

The film's strength is that it makes me ask myself what I would have done. Having been a junior cavalry officer thirty years ago, I have to ask myself, would I have followed orders or would I have treated the detainees within the articles of the Geneva Convention? Would I have been like the enlisted man who decided to punish one detainee because he had been told that he was brought in for rape? Would I have stood up to the civilians, military intelligence, or the C.I.A. who came through there like it was Times Square? Or, would have been like one sergeant who refused to participate and reported what he saw to his officer who did nothing?! These images tempered my thoughts and my outrage, because I know what I would do at this age, but what would I have done at twenty-eight?

BG Karpinski seemed set up to fail by having all the responsibility, but no authority, a sure sign that you will fry if anything goes wrong. She is in charge of a prison that has a capacity for 200 that very quickly reaches 2000. She is in charge of several prisons over a wide geographical area. She is ordered not to release anyone. This includes people thrown in there for street altercations and other non-terrifying acts. Major General Miller arrives with Carte Blanche from (?) to bring the same "correction techniques" from Guantanamo Bay to Abu-Ghraib.

The part of the film that could make any viewer want to down a seltzer water with a Pepto Bismol chaser or punch a bag, was the sickening rationale given by some some enlisted for what they did. The woman who smiled broadly over the corpse of a dead Iraqi general defended her photo with, "I always smile for pictures." There was the once cocky Lynndie England explain how she was duped and seduced by SPC Graner who would later deny that her baby was his. The most poignant was a staff sergeant who admitted that we had lost our way, that we knew why we were in Kuwait in 1991, but forgot why we were in Iraq in 2003.

This movie loses its charm for me because it doesn't add to what I already know. It's what I suspect and don't know that is important: How come no one higher than staff sergeant was convicted by court martial? When will those who gave the orders be brought to justice? As a signatory of the Geneva Convention we have agreed that if any country indicts, say, our former president or secretary of Defense, we are duty bound to hand them over or try them ourselves.

The sad news is that due to popular ignorance, many people feel that military prison is somehow harsh or harsher than civilian ones. It isn't. (I've known of one soldier sentenced to thirty years, paroled after three). That means that tormentors, such as Graner might be out much sooner than you think, and people like Rumsfeld, Yoo, Bush, and Cheney are not going at all.

With this story, my need for self-flagellation as a relief for masochistic feelings of national guilt is coming to an end. I know what happened. Now I just want justice. I want those who promulgated such orders to be brought to it. In fact it should be.

While Gibney concentrates on Bhagram, Morris focuses on Abu Ghraib, but his self-described "non-fiction horror film," which features a dramatic Danny Elfman score and slow-motion reenactments, runs along two tracks. First, he aims to find out what happened at the infamous institution. Along with the photographs and video footage, he speaks to the guards and the brigadier general who oversaw their operations, including former army specialist Lynndie England, who has all the charm of Aileen Wuornos (so memorably immortalized in Monster). As in his Thin Blue Line, accounts contradict other accounts. In Morris's world, absolute truth doesn't exist; it's up to viewers to decide which subjects seem most reliable. This leads to his parallel goal, which is to question the reliability of imagery. Photography was prohibited at Abu Ghraib, so he identifies the responsible parties, the reasoning behind their rule-breaking, and the stories behind the most incendiary pictures. This 1943 film about the Second Marine Raider Battalion in the South Pacific is based on a true story. Hollywood adjusts the facts to provide dramatic events, even if not a war-time film. Lt. Col. Evans F. Carlson had experience before WW II; he joined the Chinese Eighth Route Army to learn about their successes. The peasants out-fought the Japanese troops because they believed in their cause. (And maybe had a far larger supply of people.) In San Diego they ask for volunteers for a special mission. The volunteers are interviewed and tell about themselves; they all had something to prove. They will receive unique training, but they must cast out all prejudices and work in harmony ("gung ho"is the Chinese phrase for teamwork).

Rigorous exercises put them in peak physical shape. They learn all the tricks of judo and unconventional fighting to win and survive. These scenes are explicit. Col. Thornwald says the weakness of the Japanese troops is the inability to react quickly to unexpected conditions. [That is true for many others as well.] There were "Meatless Tuesdays" and rationing for civilians. The Battalion views the destroyed ships at Pearl Harbor. The battle of Guadalcanal and Tulagi is ongoing. Two submarines will transport the 600 men to their destination, Makin Island. They will invade, kill all the enemy troops and destroy the installation by using the element of surprise. That's the stated plan.

Japanese airplanes (which look like repainted F4F Wildcats) attack the submerged submarine unsuccessfully. [The film shows "ashcans" not the small bombs carried by fighter airplanes.] Rubber boats take the men ashore. Jap snipers in trees begin the battle. Heroic action neutralizes a machine gun nest, and the attack succeeds. Walkie-talkies are used for communication. They must next attack the radio station. Two marines take advantage of an enemy vehicle for their attack. The approach of enemy forces cause a withdrawal. Some wounded were left behind! A clever ruse causes the Japanese airplanes to attack Jap troops. They must leave the island before the Jap navy task force arrives. Colonel Thornwald ends with a speech about ensuring freedom after the war ends. How did that work out? There are no surprises in this formula movie.

International films are a hidden gold mine for any movie enthusiast. First and foremost, this is not an anti-Hollywood product because it is also a solid Hollywood blockbusters churn here and there. But for anyone who loves movies and (appreciates a good story and I'm assuming that most of you), there are a lot of great movies in different countries, which are produced as fun as anything in a big name studio.

Yes, I know, you've tried to beopen-minded, and let the day drag an arthouse theater where it was spoken by a few slow, boring and depressing foreign (non U.S.) films, some film snob who tried to SmartSound SA And after you left the theater , spent a good part of the evening to find out what the hell you just watched. Before long, you did not run went in to see your collector's edition of Die Hard movies with a burning need for something that makes sense.

And all the timeThey decided to never take advice from another snooty film critics over again.

I've been there. After the film school and grad school I had a lot of "weird" foreign films and received many bad stares SA (and types) for not seeing the films as "fundamental" or "deep" as my colleagues who smelled like shining weeds. Action is generally very high: nearly all foreign actors, I have observed very credible in their roles. Even with the movies that I did not like at the end, I realized that theyat least had a strong performance.

Plot lines would be risky in general, more: With the exception of independent cinema, most commercial film to follow here in the U.S., more or less a predictable pattern and the sequence of events. Hollywood often structures of the messages and themes of his films by data from focus groups, surveys or market research taken. Many foreign studios, on the other hand, are more likely to take a risk and give creative freedom to tell their directorsStories. Also keep in mind that most other countries, much older than the U.S.. Therefore, filmmakers and other artists from other nations have much more history and culture to draw from that what an advantage if you can always be new ideas.

Universal Theme: Our brains are constantly on the sticks of political correctness in our schools, universities, beaten, and jobs, as is a concept that is key to a social utopia dreamed by the PC thoughtpolice lies with multiculturalism and diversity, diversity, diversity.

However, international movies that you'll love contain themes that make you forget how different we are and realize just how much we all have in common. Movie "The Entity". The Entity (1981 horror movie) is a film about paranormal phenomenon,
where alleged victim was Carla Moran) (fictional character attacked by a series of invisible forces.
The Unexplained Mysteries show in what was in the house of the woman who deepens
claimed that she was attacked by mad mad spirits. Pictures were shown at the fairwhere
spherical balls flying across the room and I noticed something in the pictures, that was not
discussion about the show!

Typically Unexplained Mysteries did not miss a detail as critical to the case as this one! I am very
skeptical about what had these shows, but the pictures some compelling photography. What caught
my eyes and you could barely see the image at the bottom of the image, was a Ouija board!
You actually see a part of the board in the photo!How in the world this note, the eyes may
the staff in the Unexplained Mysteries! I have examined photographs of so-called paranormal phenomena
and the spectral images at the show were the best I've seen.

The paranormal investigators have been focused on the spherical balls jump around the room, as the
Woman held the deadly Ouija board on her lap. Luckily, she has a picture of the woman
with a deadly Ouija board, proved that they not only with somein bed and then attacked
by evil spirits. This woman was playing with fire and bring paranormal investigators to see
not of this world some ghostly activity.

I think it is for people who say there is intense paranormal activity Omitted overlooked in their house and
the fact they were achieved from the dead through a Ouija board! Also in the movie "The Exorcist"
a young girl with a Ouija board and her mother never attributes of an entity to attack themDaughter,
as a result of the game with a Ouija board. The response to these attacks is spooky cute little innocent
Regan (Exorcist girl) was sensitive to the spirit realm.

The lady who was seen photographed with bullets flying through space, like paranormal

A girl was with a sleepless night with a friend, and she took the Ouija board for some Cheap Thrills. The girls askedwhere this spirit was, they were talking to, and were taken aback by the answer! The spirit told the girls, it was in the front yard in a tree with white hair and glowing red eyes. The girls almost had a heart attack and they do not look out the window late at night on the spirit of the statement be verified. This story was well known back during my high school back then, and I was friends with one of the girls who lived in the house but never put into question her about this creepy night with the OuijaBoard. As far as I know, she never touched again the Ouija board!

My friend Bryan told me the scariest story of all Ouija board! Bryan was the subject of Ouija Board, and he tried to use by hiding them in his closet. He said a violent talked to him and told him to get the boat out of the closet. He said that voice he was tortured every day and it would not leave you alone. Given by the Board, he would not speak further threat on the subject. Inot, as he put it off or how he's doing mentally today. I have nothing but scary and horrible stories about the Ouija board, which I believe is some truth in it, this is one weird Ouija board stories.

The Train Review

This is one of my all-time favorite war movies, always rated in the top three since I first saw it years ago. I rate it so high because of four main things:

1 - Wonderful black-and-white photography; 2 - an interesting cast led by two great actors, Burt Lancaster and Paul Scofield; 3 - An intelligent, different kind of war story revolving around stolen works of great art; 4 - Just the right amount of action.

Not only the blacks-and-whites look good but the grays, too. The nighttime train shots with the white steam coming out is just spectacular. You can feel the grease and grime on these railroad men as the work on the train. If a very sharp Blu-Ray disc comes out on this, I'll scoop it up immediately.

This is a pretty long film but it doesn't have many lulls, especially when the train starts to roll. I have viewed this a half-dozen times over the years and have never been disappointed with it. Director John Frankenheimer gives some interesting commentary on this, too, so you might to check that out on the disc.

This is one of John Frankenheimer's breathless gems--all marvelous action that never lets up. Burt Lancaster plays a French train engineer during the waning days of the German occupation who tries to prevent Nazi colonel Paul Scofield from transporting a precious art collection back to Germany. Utilizing sabotage and cunning deception, Lancaster and his Resistance colleagues stall for time with the Allies on their way. It's a brilliantly made film, showing off Lancaster's acrobatic skills (he performed all of his own stunts) and Frankenheimer's sense of pacing and brilliant use of space. It's choreographed with the utmost precision (those are real explosions during the pivotal strafing sequence) and extremely authentic in its details. Lancaster is in rare minimalist form, and Scofield manages to extract intelligence and sympathy. The Indian film industry has a huge following not only at home but also abroad, particularly in countries that have a significant Indian population. The term Bollywood is a term coined for the Hindi-language film industry in Bombay, India set. Bollywood is often incorrectly referred to the whole of Indian cinema. It is in fact only part of the film industry.

The introduction of cinema in India began with the Lumiere brothers' screening six short films are silent in the hotel in WatsonBombay. In 1910, Dadasaheb Phalke attended a screening of The Life of Christ at PB Mehta's American - Indian Cinema and decided, even a movie himself. His first silent film Raja Harishchandra was released in 1913. The first Indian feature film with sound was Ardeshir Irani's Alam Ara (1931), which was a super hit. The period between the 1930s and 1940s, he saw a large number of social upheavals and the partition of India. While most filmmakers chose the easy way out, there wasSome directors who initiated from various social issues and used the movement as a backdrop for their scripts.

The 1950s brought with it, color films, yet people continue to diligently black and white films, followed by the mid-1960s. Story plots usually revolved around romance and melodramatic themes. Success stories of this generation include actors such as Dilip Kumar, Nargis, Madhubala, Nutan, Raj Kapoor, Meena Kumari and Dev Anand. Directors soon change in emphasis from the Romantic1960 to the movies with stars like Dharmendra, Anil Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Jaya Bachchan and Rekha. This trend continued until the early 1990s.

The 1990s has been the focus of films transition back to love in the family-centric stories. Successful films of that time include Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994) and first come, get the Bride (1995). The actors for their performance and who later went to bag bigger and better roles include Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, ShahrukhKhan and actresses like Madhuri Dixit and Kajol. At the same time, comedy and action films continue to hold the audience's attention with popular actors such as Govinda, Akshay Kumar, Raveena Tandon and Karisma Kapoor. Independent art films slowly started following commercially also around this time.

In 2000, Bollywood began anchoring attention abroad by blockbusters like Devdas, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Dhoom 2, while providing a whole new generation of fresh young faces, such asAishwarya Rai, Hrithik Roshan, Preity Zinta and Rani Mukerji.

Two Mules For Sister Sara Review

This film is a great vehicle for Shirley MacLaine & Clint Eastwood. It has always been one of my favorite Eastwood westerns. Though the film, once viewed, will not have the same impact with subsequent viewings because you already know that Sister Sara is NOT a nun.

The film isn't only a dramatic western it also contains some whimsical & funny moments. Throughout the film hints are dropped to the audience that Sara isn't all she appears to be: When she picks up the cheroot butt & puffs it, when she takes a swig of whiskey & when she curses. The scene where she assists Eastwood in blowing up the bridge is a classic moment.

Along the way they help one another, even saving the other's life. Eastwood just wants to make a buck & Sara's reason seem to be altruistic but even her motives are questionable toward the end of the movie. And when Eastwood finds out she isn't a nun he gets angry about the deception, then when he "takes" her in the bathtub you realize how much he had held back because of her supposed occupation. The ending is superb with plenty of action though the second half of the movie flounders just a little.

In the cactus-studded Mexican backcountry of the 1860s, a surly drifter who could easily be mistaken for the Man with No Name becomes protector and lethal helpmate to a red-haired nun wanted by the French for aiding the Juarista revolutionaries. Essentially a two-character showcase for the newly stellar Clint Eastwood and what was beginning to seem the poststellar Shirley MacLaine (subbing for Elizabeth Taylor), this sardonic study in testy collaboration, mutual deception and distrust, and slightly creepy sexual attraction is highly rated by a fairly small number of critics--chiefly, one suspects, for the dual-auteur cachet of having been directed by Don Siegel and based on a story by Budd Boetticher. Others deem it an undersauced spaghetti Western and find that the stars grate on the viewer as well as each other. Cinematography by the great Gabriel Figueroa is some consolation, but... if only Boetticher had been allowed to direct. --Richard T. Jameson
