An analysis of Edith Story

Edith, in history, a perspective quite often outdated and cheered on the war and his life. The story embodies the kind of charm and prestige that the World War 2 films represent, or have done. Of course, this story has tried to emphasize the war as good and necessary for the life of the community. Somehow, I can testify to support this, but this is an immediate conclusion. The author seems to frame the story revolves around thethe life of a couple.

Seemed almost as if he made an epic novel. His feelings and desires about the honor that was the war between the fans exciting and fascinating. For me the war to all the winners and losers was sent almost impossible that war brings. Come to think of it, the war, which have in the past, the terror and brought about the destruction occurred. I am personally convinced that war is never a necessaryreach a common goal.

A devout Christian, the conflict and struggle are among the subjects in the first place we want to abolish. It is sad to note, however, that the war can be avoided. Managed in the course of our history, a major war comes every 100 years in an attempt to use the system, change the world. Since these new superpower, the balance will shift and countries start to have conflicts. Sad as it may, the war takes place. Movies, books and other historyliterary continue to glorify their image, because people need an escape from reality, I think action movies or cartoons. We can not tolerate pain that war brings. It will hide more and more creative sources for us, our feelings about the war, but as I said before, is a sad fact of life.

Salvador (Special Edition)

Salvador (Special Edition) Review

The Bottom Line:

Salvador has a whole bunch of things wrong with it but the central character, as essayed by James Woods, is an absolutely fascinating character--a journalist with the ethos of a lovable con man--and the film manages to always be interesting even when its erratic pacing or on-again off-again plot threaten to sabotage the movie; it's not as polished as Oliver Stone's other 1986 film (the one that won Best Picture), but I guarantee the character of Richard Boyle will stay with you.

3/4

Salvador (Special Edition) Overview

Director Oliver Stone (Platoon, JFK) offers up this brilliant, engrossing true-life account of the violent civil war in El Salvador as told through the perspective of a has-been journalist trying for one last grasp at glory and finding the true horror of war. James Woods is freelance journalist Richard Boyle, who leaves San Francisco broke with his drug-addled, disc-jockey buddy (Jim Belushi) to cover the escalating conflict and hopefully return to his former stature as a war correspondent. What he finds is a nation torn by random violence, shifting ideologies, poverty, and the malevolent influence of the United States. Boyle tries to make sense of the brutality he sees while extracting his girlfriend from the war zone and saving his own life. Featuring John Savage (The Deer Hunter) as an earnest photojournalist, this is a fascinating and riveting depiction of the bloody strife that tore apart a nation and mirrored the disillusionment of the Vietnam era. --Robert Lane

Sharpe's Mission

Sharpe's Mission Review

"Sharpe's Mission" starts with a flashback early in Wellington's Peninsula campaign where then Captain Sharpe (Sean Bean) and another officer named Brand (Mark Strong) encounter a French patrol. The French are holding a wounded British lieutenant and torturing him. Sharpe is going to rush the position but Brand goes instead. However, once Brand reaches the French they slip away and he shoots the lieutenant, bringing the body back to the other British troops. Because of his "heroism," as reported by Sharpe, Brand is promoted. The ruse has put a French spy into position in Wellington's army.

When we come to the present Major Sharpe is ordered to go behind French lines with a detachment commanded by Colonel Brand to destroy an ammunitions dump. On the other side the French want Brand to set a trap to capture Major General Ross (James Laurenson) and have another "ruse de guerre" to help with that plan. Meanwhile, Sharpe and Patrick Harper (Daragh O'Malley) are having similar problems with their brides. Jane Sharpe (Abigail Cruttenden), weary of being a military wife, is enjoying the attentions of a poet who has gone to make drawings of the war. Ramona Harper (Diana Perez) is made at her husband, who is paying too much attention to the gypsy girls visiting the camp, and is the target of the unwanted affections of Shellington (Warren Saire), a sergeant who is Brand's right-hand man.

The gypsies also introduce us to one of the more interesting supporting characters in the series. Major Pyecroft (Nigel Betts) is an explosions expert who weathers a leather hood because of a fuse that was cut too short. When Brand and Shellington, wearing their own masks, slaughter a young gypsy girl's parents, he helps her bury them and makes himself her protector. Pyecroft and Ross are old friends, but the "accident" has come between them, and the Major is not happy with being assigned to this particular mission. Brand, hearing that the gypsy girl escaped, is out to silence the one witness who can tie him to the murders. Then there is the mission to capture the French fort and destroy the ammunition before the French troops show up in force, which involves a couple of nice moments when Sharpe convinces the foot to surrender and gives Brand's men a way to end their military careers honorably.

This eleventh film in the Sharpe series has an original screenplay by Charles Wood based on the Bernard Cornwell Sharpe novels (one of two in the series). The fact that this is an original story and not an adaptation undoubtedly explains why for once in the series the villains enjoy an appropriate comeuppance at the hands of Sharpe and his Chosen Men. Sharpe actually deals with Brand, Harper gets to pay back Shellington, and it is Coporal Harris (Jason Salkey) who fixes the wagon of the poet wooing Jane. The fight between Harper and Shellington is one of the better choreographed fights in the series (with a neat setting) and I especially like the way Sharpe and Harris dispatch their targets. This might not be the way Cornwell would have done it, but for once it is great to just indulge in pointed victories.

The Man Who Never Was

The Man Who Never Was Review

The movie is based on a real story. During WWII, the British tried to fool the Nazis about the places and times of the Allied invasions. The deception about the invasion in Normandy is told in Eye of the Needle and the deception about the invasion of Sicily is the subject of this film. The idea is to let the Germans discover the body of a courier carrying false letters. Stephen Boyd, a fantastic actor who died very young plays the dangerous and seducing Irish spy trying to verify if the story is authentic. A fantastic and bizarre movie.

The Man Who Never Was Specifications

A real beauty of a true story provides the basis for The Man Who Never Was, a gripping World War II picture that has no combat scenes, no great vistas of troops. The time is 1943, as the Allies prepare the invasion of Sicily and desperately need a diversionary ploy to make the Germans suspect another invasion target. The solution is simple but ingenious: a dead man's body will be left in the sea to float ashore on the coast of Spain; made to look like a British pilot, he will be carrying papers suggesting an Allied attack on Greece. When the papers fall to the Nazis, they'll swallow the bogus story…or will they? The film's final third tracks an Irish spy for the Axis (Steven Boyd, in one of his first roles) as he travels to London to investigate loose ends.

Clifton Webb gives a crisp, disciplined performance as Ewen Montagu, the officer in charge of the scheme. The film errs only in some melodrama involving Gloria Grahame, the histrionic roommate of an Intelligence worker. Other than that, director Ronald Neame brings his steady, classy approach to bear on a good yarn, and saves special grace for the treatment of the unfortunate dead man who unwittingly loaned his body to a stunt that saved hundreds, if not thousands, of lives. The film's final haunting shots capture the ethereal shiver of its title. --Robert Horton

Shirley Temple, I Still Love You!

Shirley Temple was the biggest thing with the girls when I was a child. When my sister was able to generate a penny went to one of his films. As a child I was interested not in war and Western movies. That is until puberty, when I in the war, the Western interest, and any movie with a sexy woman. If "The Outlaw" came to our city, we sneak out of us to see them. Wow

The films of Shirley Temple with my kids watching on television. It's niceGirls with cute dimples and all. Shirley also has a few films as a teenager. I have a couple of these on television and the first thing that struck me that she has spoken the same way as in its infancy. A Director! Well, maybe the way she always talks. But I think that is what ended his career, although I have not spoken, and I'm afraid to call:

"Shirley?

"Who?"

"John Jones,Writer.

"I've never heard of her. Can I help you?" (And "always so nice and friendly, I think.)

"This is not an alias, Shirley."

"Same answer do. What do you, Mr. Jones?

"In fact, Dr. Jones."

"Same answer. What Dr. Jones?

"I wanted to ask what happened to your film career."

"Nothing happened, except, like all film career is over."

I was afraid the child, such as a dialog askinghis teenage movies. I would say: "For the United States of America, I want to thank you for your many years of service to our country, Ambassador, Head of Protocol Assistant in the White House, and everything else."

"You do not sound like a writer, Dr. Jones, but I thank you for the kind words, anyway."

Then it would be me, before I ask him why Gerald Ford sent him as ambassador to the Republic of Ghana.

He is the president who made it to the White HouseThe Chief of Protocol, so I think he wrote for her.

Betty probably said: "Gerald, what the hell is going to ask you to send Shirley Temple for Ghana! You had sent him to Kashmir. Next time, let me first!"

He got the point, I think. (Well, if you are not yet a Washington insider, you have to guess.)

However, Shirley Temple stopped acting after his film career. It is on television and radio. Her second husband, Charles Black, was probably a major factor in his lifeCivil Service to do, but hobnobbed with presidents of all time and would lead to influence. (All, with the exception of Gerald Ford, who in Ghana.)

Shirley took the name of her husband. Impressed me. Showed had class. E has become "very mature and beautiful woman. It has a wonderful contribution to our country. That is why we all love Shirley Temple Black.

The Small Back Room

The Small Back Room Review

Sammy Rice (David Farrar) is a first-rate scientist and something of an expert in defusing bombs. The year is 1943 and the Germans have starting dropping a new kind of terror weapon on Britain. It's something small, evidently attractive to children, and explodes either when it's picked up or just touched. No one is sure because the three children and one adult who did touch the things were killed. Rice is asked to investigate by the Army. He says he has to have an unexploded device to work on; that he'll come as soon as the Army calls him. Rice, it happens, has also lost his foot and wears a metal one. He suffers pain from it and is well into a self-pitying meltdown fueled by alcohol. Susan (Kathleen Byron), the woman who loves him, understands what he's going through but sooner or later will have enough of his self-involvement. "Sue, you'd have such a good life without me," he tells her in a nightclub. "I take things from you with both hands. I always have. I always will."

Sammy Rice has to deal with his self-imposed isolation, his drinking and his unwillingness to face up to the fact that he has an artificial foot. Through all this, the group of scientists and managers Rice works with has come up with an anti-tank gun some feel is ready to sell to the government. He doesn't, but he's not willing to go against the consensus. Then, deep in an alcoholic haze, he gets the phone call. Two devices have been discovered. One is now being worked on by the Army captain who first asked him to help. It probably goes without saying that soon there is no Army captain and only one remaining device. Rice leaves for the English coast where the device is half buried in the sand. What he does with it will determine not only his life, but will affect his whole outlook on himself, his worth and his willingness to accept responsibility.

Sound a little...well, too much? The Small Back Room features some very good acting, excellent dialogue, one of Michael Powell's quirky internal surrealistic scenes (as Rice fights his compulsion to have a drink) and an extremely well-handled and tense final twenty-five minutes as Rice works to defuse the bomb. On the whole, though, it seems to me that Powell and Pressburger, after such a run of great movies they created in the Forties, used The Small Back Room as a way to step back and let out a long breath. The movie is by no means a let-down, but the sulky self-pity of Sammy Rice leaves little room for us to get willingly involved with him. This is a problem because the movie, despite an exciting premise with the new-type of German bomb and the excitement of the last third of the film, is essentially a character study in Rice's self-pity. Sammy Rice starts out gloomy and unhappy, and he stays that way throughout the movie until he walks across the sand to see if he can defuse the bomb. Powell and Pressburger's subversive humor (a dolt of a governmental minister, a glad-handing arms manager) is amusing but we still wind up with Rice feeling sorry for himself.

I think it's fair to say that The Small Back Room marks the coming decline of Powell and Pressburger. The Tales of Hoffmann was still to be made, but with that exception every movie following The Small Back Room marked a decline in the kind of original, unusual cinematic storytelling that was the hallmark of The Archers. They had to deal with studio moneymen who gradually assumed control over the freedom that they had enjoyed with J. Arthur Rank and Alexander Korda. They, especially Powell, found it increasingly difficult to find subject matter that excited them. At one point, four years elapsed before they took on a new project. The Archers last movie turned out to be something Powell swore he'd never make after all those Quota Quickies in the Thirties, a programmer. They drifted apart, still friends, and went their own ways.

For those who admire Powell and Pressburger, The Small Back Room is well worth having. In addition to Farrar and Byron, both of whom were in Black Narcissus, there are a number of fine actors to enjoy, such as Jack Hawkins, Cyril Cusack, Sid James, Leslie Banks, Michael Gough, Robert Morley and Renee Asherson.

This Criterion release has an excellent DVD transfer. I only sampled the extras, which include a booklet essay, a commentary, a video interview with Christopher Challis who worked with Powell and Pressburger on several of their movies, and an audio excerpt of Powell's dictations for his autobiography. If you haven't bought the two volumes yet, I think you'll find A Life in Movies: An Autobiography and Million Dollar Movie great reading.

Thank goodness for DVD and for Criterion. Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger are no more, but we have their greatest films still with us. Says Challis, "It was a great team and I'm terribly sorry it packed up."

The Small Back Room Feature

  • After the lavish Technicolor spectacle of The Red Shoes, British filmmakers Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger retreated to the inward, shadowy recesses of this moody, crackling character study. Based on the acclaimed novel by Nigel Balchin, The Small Back Room details the professional and personal travails of troubled, alcoholic research scientist and military bomb-disposal expert Sammy Rice (

The Small Back Room Overview

In their career, the Archers--Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger--made films both epic and intimate. The Small Back Room falls into the latter category. The interiors in this black-and-white picture, after a trio in Technicolor, are close and dimly lit, but rustic exteriors (including Stonehenge) and a surrealistic set piece add welcome flair. In 1943, Londoner Sammy Rice (David Farrar, quite good), a master at defusing incendiary devices, works for the Ministry of Defense. Whiskey helps to relieve the discomfort of a leg injury caused, presumably, by a mission gone wrong. As he tells girlfriend Susan (Kathleen Byron, softer than in Black Narcissus), who serves as secretary for the back-room boys, "It leaves me not caring whether it hurts or not." In order to decode Germany's new booby-trapped bomb, the military enlists his expertise, but Rice's drinking problem makes him a liability. Noir, suspense, and documentary-style realism converge to create a sympathetic portrait of one man's struggle with shame and inadequacy, providing a link between Brief Encounter and The Lost Weekend. As critic Raymond Durgnat suggests, it isn't "a 'story one follows', but a sensibility in which one bathes." This shadowy room may not be the best place to begin with the Archers, but it's a fine place with which to end. The Criterion Collection edition adds erudite commentary from author Charles Barr, an essay from Sight & Sound editor Nick James, an interview with cinematographer Chris Challis, and dictation excerpts from Powell's memoir, Million Dollar Movie. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Frank Sinatra MGM Movie Legends Collection (The Manchurian Candidate / Guys and Dolls / The Pride and the Passion / A Hole in the Head / Kings Go Forth)

Frank Sinatra MGM Movie Legends Collection (The Manchurian Candidate / Guys and Dolls / The Pride and the Passion / A Hole in the Head / Kings Go Forth) Review

Thierry Guillo "loulou05" is incorrect. I have not seen the other movies in this set (yet), but Guys & Dolls and A Hole in the Head are very much musicals! Frank Sinatra does sing in A Hole in the Head, including the popular "High Hopes." He also sings "All My Tomorrows" in this movie. In Guys & Dolls, Sinatra sings the title song as well as "Adelaide," "Sue Me," and the crap game song in the barbershop. Marlon Brando does a lot of singing in Guys & Dolls, too, and the horse race song sung by the characters Nicely, Benny, and Charlie is so catchy it will stay in your head for days! Movies don't get much more musical than Guys & Dolls! This set looks like a great deal & I plan to try it soon!

Frank Sinatra MGM Movie Legends Collection (The Manchurian Candidate / Guys and Dolls / The Pride and the Passion / A Hole in the Head / Kings Go Forth) Specifications

Five Sinatra movies are boxed in this set, culled from his biggest era as movie star. There are no Rat Pack movies here, nor the early croonings of the bobby-soxer's dreamboat, rather a look at how Sinatra chose to spend his most powerful years as a box-office draw. There's just one bona fide classic in the bunch, The Manchurian Candidate, although Guys and Dolls is an awfully fun picture. Not many extra features for this box, although Manchurian Candidate has the good supporting stuff from its regular disc.

1962's Manchurian Candidate, directed by John Frankenheimer from a crackerjack novel by Richard Condon, is simply one of the essential American films of the 1960s, and a gnawing cry of discontent that sounds more clearly with each passing year. Sinatra and Laurence Harvey are ex-Korean War POWs with a shared nightmare, but only Harvey has a purpose: he's a lethal political weapon. Frankenheimer's direction is brilliant, capturing the feel of the early TV age, and the film is blackly, weirdly funny. Sinatra gives maybe his greatest performance, but Angela Lansbury nearly steals the movie as Harvey's mother.

Guys and Dolls (1955) is adapted from one of the finest of Broadway musicals, so you can understand why director Joseph Mankiewicz (All About Eve) fell in love with the Damon Runyon characters and the stylized milieu of sharpies and dames. Sinatra makes perfect sense as Nathan Detroit, and Vivian Blaine repeats her show-stopping stage role as Adelaide, but Mankiewicz perversely cast two non-singers in the leads: Marlon Brando as high-roller Sky Masterson, and Jean Simmons as Salvation Army lass Sarah Brown. Neither is a belter, but they do bring something gentle to their roles. The whole thing is overdone, but the marvelous music holds up.

The Pride and the Passion (1957) puts Sinatra in one of his most embarrassing roles, a Spanish fighter in the age of Napoleon, shepherding a giant cannon with the help of a British military man (Cary Grant). The boys share a mistress, Sophia Loren. This madness was directed by Stanley Kramer, who somehow let Sinatra do a Spanish accent, complete with rolled "r"s. Amazingly, it was one of the ten biggest grossing films of its year.

An even odder curio is Delmer Daves's Kings Go Forth (1958), with Sinatra and Tony Curtis as WWII soldiers competing for the attention of Natalie Wood, who has a secret that will affect the way they see her. It comes from Hollywood's era of "topic" movies, but simply doesn't gain much traction--the only character not Representing Something is Sinatra's tender portrait of a soldier at loose ends.

Finally, Frank Capra's A Hole in the Head (1959) gives Sinatra the kind of lovable rogue part he could knock off without breaking a sweat. He's a Miami widower with a son and some big dreams… you might even call them "high hopes." Yes, that Oscar-winning song comes from this movie, with Frankie and child star Eddie Hodges providing the vocals. If the movie isn't quite a Capra classic (he'd been out of film for a few years before this, and would make only one more feature after it), it fits neatly into the "family film" format. There goes another rubber-tree plant…. --Robert Horton

Pompeo Batoni encrypted message is now fixed

"War and Peace" is an allegory of life, and more (see link below).

The man is the person designated to handle the troubles of everyday life and bring home the bread. He is armed, and snaps the sword is strong and light. The man is young and strong, perhaps too young to symbolize the qualities terrible war, his red coat in full screen mode. Currently, the abolition of man "to protect the shine of peace is. It's dark and ugly is on the sign.

ThePeace is to tap or push away the sword of war, while the search for the lost people in the eye. "He tried to say something? Password olive branch, its instrument of last line of defense. Peace won attention because of the war?" I am ready to embrace or dance?

Is the "Make Love Not Wars" message Pompeo Batoni "300 years" war and peace
It is intended to be of short duration. What can I say?

The long neck with DragonWing Ornament "on the war helmet rounding" is the same Evil / Dragon Ball pointed to the country from the Infant Jesus of "The Virgin and Child in Glory" way.

What is a mystery to the understanding of "War and Peace" You Should Know "The Virgin and Child in glory.

Suppose for a moment the dragon is there to detail a decorative display that evil. Think of the party in the 18th Century, without horror, action orStar Wars film and television. They were storytellers, theater, music, some opera, war, wine and sex, of course. The paintings and sculptures from the period were inspired and created a detailed story.Every tell, was there to add, and give the idea of this story.

If you still want to paint "war and peace.

The dragon is from the top, marked the highest element of the painting. What is he doing there?

He already owns the war and isFocus on peace. Only the leaves are olive oil between the dragon and peace. Does the head of the dragon "was for them?

Suddenly, the picture has changed direction. It is no longer the "Make Love Not War" message. It's more like "Choose Love and Light Side, or ..." Message. The staff is very scary indeed. I doubt that contemporaries fully understood Pompeo Batoni. The key is "The Madonna and Child in Glory" and I'm like a film made in 1997 in Toledo ArtMuseum.

Man, I mean us, not the symbol of war, can make a choice. Take the helmet "and choose the pretty lady." Make this world a better place.

Rage of the Wind

Rage of the Wind Review

During the time of the Japanese invasion, Yasuaki Kurata stars as a Japanese who has taken control of a small fishing town. Pretty basic story here, but well done. Chen Sing plays the hero, and his wife is played by Irene Ryder, an American. He went to America and became a boxer, but after killing a man he has decided to give up boxing and move back to his home town in China. Now he has to stop the Japanese and that's as far as the story goes. Some great fights at the end make this worth watching. Kurata and Chen Sing made a lot of movies together, and this is one of their best. The final fight on the beach is just about as good as basher action gets. Yukio Someno has a great role playing Kurata's top man, and Jimmy Lee and Bruce Leung Siu Lung have an awesome cameo where they show up to fight Kurata. Kurata- "what do you want with me?" Jimmy Lee- "TO KILL YOU!!!".

3.5/5

Picture quality on the World Video DVD is decent. Full screen and English dubbed.

Since I have a deaf pilot in a control tower, airport management and breakfast, Part III

On my way through the ground floor with black ink, a breath of cold air over the landscape, makes me shudder involuntarily. Gooseflesh spread like wildfire, so I rub my arms strong. A cold front crossed.

Open the trunk, I quickly pulled through my gym bags, not sure if I packed a sweatshirt. All I had to see the distance that are useful, was a lightweight Gore-Tex jacket. In the far corner, I noticedlittle lumps. Believing that a cover, my hopes and then increased rent at a time when it is proved by a bunch of greasy rags.

Crap.

Penaud not better prepared for something like that, I climbed into the cockpit, the castle has a door and slam facilitate fuller.

Drag the co-pilot's seat, I found the hotel property. Paris Hilton would not be approved. And I was a contortionist, my expansiongiven the size of it. But it will.

First I stretched between the two front seats, curling into a fetal position, but if the belt loop protruding threatened outbreak, I tried to lay on my back, then on his stomach. And 'round like the whole night. With each new position, my legs were forced into positions very unnatural.

Oh my.

This was also the last of my problems. Not only was bitter, but I had the audacity to park in the vicinity of the rotationLighthouse, which kept me awake every 60 seconds. It reminded me of the prisoners of war films in which powerful spotlight swept the prison yard, the light in and out of the bungalows on the dark street.

I am a little 'the hang of it and fell asleep from exhaustion.

At daybreak, I saw one outside the cockpit. What I saw made me that I had died and gone to heaven.

The entire airport was completely fogged in!

The fog swallowedeverything that moves, including the wings of the aircraft. I knew he would not be in the foreseeable future.

For three hours I was humming around the airport and watched the sunrise walk cut through the fog. Begin to work its magic, because the line of surrounding trees, completely wrapped in earlier, was always visible every minute that passes. A glance at my clock it, 9th In an hour I can see see the plane "to be shot directly over the airport and studyOutside of the city. If he was still in remote areas of fog, I would be right to wait again, and a little bit "more.

Promptly at 10, the "look-see" plan. The progress of the gas wide open, the plane roared happily and raised in the air in the morning with not even a bump. During the climb, I have recorded from left to right. Apart from occasional patches of fog had almost all disappeared. Relieved, I opened my home airport identifier (KVLL - formerly known as 7D2) in the GPS and turned itselfcorrect the record.

Within five minutes my stomach rumbles, remember that I had not had breakfast.

"I have a home in another forty-five minutes you can wait," I said to my stomach.

E, "growled loudly disdain.

Then I remember there was an airport on a route that has the right restaurant on the ground. I had several occasions and the food was very good. Why not stop?

There was a problem.

The airport has a control. Turn

"How could I, a pilot project for the deaf, come on?" I thought.

So I thought I remembered something someone told me to fly to Kansas. This person told me that the special arrangements with the tower supervisor was the day before or day of departure, they fly to and from airports with no control problems.

How did this) was due to contact with the supervisor in a phone service (at home or at the airport of origin and ask whether it was possible tohim to make an emergency landing of a light signal gun (now used in case of failure of radio). If the controller was willing to give him shelter, a date, estimated time of arrival, and would agree to use the route. If the driver was deaf in the vicinity of the airport would be a strong beam of the tower a green light flashing, landing permission. (There are other lights that say different things, but a green light is what you want to see the pilots, deaf).

As I mentioned earlier, thisConversation, I understood that he had made such arrangements.

"Well, there's always another time.

As I thought a crazy idea is born. I smiled for the first time this morning.

To be continued ........

A Long Way Gone - Memoirs of a Boy Soldier

Literature Discussion

Puzzle 1

The writing can be a powerful tool to help understand a problem. Write a problem on paper, can be seen in its entirety. You can see the beginning, a middle and an end to it immediately. If you live in one thing to concentrate exclusively on what is happening now. Do not have a chance to step back and see how this event will have something else, because they change. WhenYou write the whole problem for you to see the events as little interaction with each other in and as the final result.

The writing can be a great help in finding a way to work with problems and correct them. You can do it as a way to heal themselves and to understand why the problem should be used. Personally, I use writing as a means to get all my physical problems head. In general, once I see my problem very carefully on the card (usually in the form of a poem), I can be a way to find a value forabout the problem. Ishmael uses the letter as a means to return to a time when she was happy when everything was in order. He was in a position to be "baby that was almost lost again be obtained. When I write, ideas, thoughts, my worries, all my emotions just flow onto the page. I usually do not know what I'm writing in front of me then . I found that writing allows me, in my problems and showed me what I am right.

The font can be used manydifferent ways, but it is a possibility that might help someone. The letter can bring back to a time when you want, you can come back, or you can in a place where you want, you can go. Member can simply take. Member can bring peace, you can clear my head, and you can almost everything better, even if only a little. "Writing is a great was to start the healing process. My personal writing has saved me many situations mentally. He held myMind.

Reflection 2

A Long Way Gone "was written by a student about his life, especially since he was a child. Many people have difficulty relating to this subject, but the truth. I do not think that we will be able to remember that many in this detail. These people will admit that the horrific events actually took place, but you can never know whether the information is correct. ask yourself what you can really trust what they read.

There are some events in a personLife can not be forgotten. Even if they want to print on their heads. The events that negotiations Ismael well in this type of event. How can you forget? He tried to block it, but again, tells us that the dreams of his military service. There will never be able to fully from what he suffered recover. Ishmael speaks at a time when his father give him something special, that their memories would help, would theirClassroom tests. Ishmael was not sure that actually worked, but he tells how he could remember almost everything, as if it is a "snapshot" in his head. Ismael is a very good memory, I do not feel particularly how he could forget the tragic and terrible, when he suffered a boy soldier.

I think we should consider the pleadings as A Long Way Gone like the truth. We must remember that some of the edges of the memory fades with time, can have a small detaila little 'change, but the whole story is true as a whole. We must examine all information provided to us by the critics, but honest. Go to the right side of the book, passage, conferences, or written to the memory card was.

Reflection 3

A Long Way Gone "makes us the war in a way that none of us wants. We all saw the war in the movies, the media and books, especially outside perspective represented. This book makes us consider the powerful war the eyes of aMen are afraid of participating in. It is forced to participate in order to survive. We see a new set of eyes. He does not know sugar coating the situation, making it look better, so it is. It tells us only superficially what he saw and what he felt. With regard Ishmael, we see man's inhumanity, the suffering of the innocent, and that these struggles can make any person.

Ishmael has learned how to kill with emotion. Has learned not to examine the person and decide toTo look at compassion, but only to the situation. Taught him the situation was desperate, and the only way to survive is to eliminate competition. They gave no hope of a compromise. It was their way or death.

When I was brought up in this situation, I would have problems. I want to have a real battle against my own will be able to take only a man's life, without thinking back. Personally, I think, very much. Ishmael and the other soldiers just seenRebels destroy as something on the way to their destination, something, not as another human being. They thought that this has so deeply imprinted in their minds, some never get out of their ability.

My future would be significantly affected if I were forced to this kind of conflict. I'd never get in a position to images in my head. I do not know how to change it from life. Ishmael has found a way to be happy. I struggle with the memories of pain I caused. Ishmael was strongHe has found a way he could do.

Reflection 4

Friend of Ishmael began to ask him about his past. They asked whether he was a "witness [ed] part of the struggle." He said: "Everyone has done in this country." They asked him: "You mean you walk around saw people with guns and shoot each other?" He told them that he had "seen the whole time." His friend thought it would be cool. Ishmael then he smiled about what he thought.

People tend to idealize thingsWar and combat. I'm sure if the friends have read of Ishmael in that book and through the eyes of someone who actually participated in combat would be seen and have felt differently. You see the suffering and the destruction of something, thinking "cool causes".

Everything in the past had someone to help in shaping their future, it is better or worse it is. Her past helps to shape your future. You can your past or your future and buildsomething that you want to leave you or destroy everything you worked. It's all yours. You can not change your past. You can affect the way you let your future. There are certain things you must be close and protected, and other things that leave you behind. Everyone is different and what they need is unique.

We have the ability to be who and whatever you want. We are the master painter sat before his canvas pearl. Our past is the brush that weElection in which they move and how it moves. The painting is our future. It is new and is slowly starting to show the big picture. We need to decide how we want our paintings to rotate. What we have done, can not be renewed, but we can use to make the image into something beautiful. We have the ability to create wonderful wonderful creations. We need only to believe, have the courage to take the brush.

Reflection 5

Ishmael turned to music when they needed anything. He toucheshim and take it all away. Ismael had a passion for rap music. He had a love for the stories behind the music. Let the music takes your mind and body. He loved to sing and dance to the rhythm.

Music has always been a big influence in my life. I'm playing and listening, always touches my soul. The music is so full of emotion and expression. He has a way of saying exactly what I felt without my knowledge. There is always music for every situation andMood. If I need to hear the beautiful music of inspiration for writing, something that is a story full of excitement and fun, with the use of words, or need something told with a spirit behind him to be out of funk, the music because . I was never left alone when I am the music. There was always something there when I needed them.

The music has a very effective way to touch the soul. Penetrates deep into a person like nothing else can in the world. Musiccan affect people around the world. You do not need the text, or even listen or understand the words that have the power to bring the music. Music can inspire and elevate the soul. The music takes us. It captivates the soul. Music is medicine for the heart and soul. Notes You can meet us and transport us a wonderful journey, if only, if only we can enjoy the music in order to touch our hearts and feel the healing content there.

CGI Internet Movies

The film has opened 300 has a new era in film production. So hot on his heels in front of 300, Beowolf suggests that accelerating the digital revolution, film. As long as the actors, cameramen and officials still can claim that they are an integral part of making the film?

Since the beginning of 1990 it was clear that cinema is the way to an average period of cellulose is at least. Who would have that film would be presenteddigital, especially film-less, less tape, and now the path less! This was in large part by economic necessity of low-budget filmmakers, who have not compete economically with the studios to purchase "promotion trademark of players whose habitual residence of the A-list. Top 10 Best War Movies

This list includes films that war was immersed in action and thought. There are countless war films in the course of the century, but these seem to be above the rest. This list if for the film with more action adjusted, but as an emotional story (Schindler's List).

10. Braveheart: We will never forget the cry of "freedom" at the end of the film. Mel Gibson gives a better performance than the fight for freedom against the Scots, who headsScottish revolt against the British in 1298 in They are so many memorable lines of the battle, and you seem to the measures taken.

9. 300: This stunning film directed by Zach Snyder is one of the most memorable war films in the last five years. It leads to a distance of 300 Spartans against against one million Persians in the Battle of Thermopylae. Xerxes tried to convince King Leonidas subject (the protagonist), but Leonidas fight to the death, firstObeisance to a foreign king. Beautiful images along with the amazing choreography, filmed entirely on Green Screen.

E 'shocking film was impressive and would be better that you would like to thank Ken Watanabe.Watanabe plays General Kuribayashi, and offers an excellent performance of honor and courage under fire. Of course, this story of the battle of Iwo Jima, told through the eyes of the Japanese. It's still strange that our enemies have tried, both for our military actions.

2. Patton: There have always been bold, brave, Fired Up General George S. Patton. This is the movie that shows Patton with his glorious victories and some back in September, it gives us a little "little idea of what the great commander, who has lived and how he thought. The film begins with Patton's career in North Africa and evolves through the invasion of Germany and the fall of the Third Reich. The film can be a little "long (3 1 / 2 hours I believe), but it's worth to watch if you have time. Curiously, George C. Scott playing Patton, I think the similarity with the name of a strange coincidence, and fun.

StorySpielberg tells the fascinating story of a troop of Army Rangers, about Private Ryan, whose three brothers were killed searching. They are easier for him to return home to his mother can find a consolation. Remembering the American Soldier: WW2 Ring of Steel (1941) [DVD] Review

Remembering the American Soldier: WW2 Ring of Steel (1941) [DVD] Overview

Ring of Steel, a World War II ode to the American soldier, is given a rousing narration by famous actor Spencer Tracy. A veteran of WWI himself, Spencer adds cache to this already well-made patriotic film. It credits multiple generations of soldiers for the many years of freedom and safety that the United States has experienced since the foundation of our country. The film was made in 1942 for the U.S. Office of Emergency Management and serves as a wonderful historical bit of genuine patriotism.

Augustus

Augustus Review

I realy enjoyed this movie! I learned alot bout all the main characters you felt you were realy in rome at that period of history geat acting by all cast members and awsome production values! I purchased this very cheeply at amazon dvd's !

Augustus Overview

Augustus is equal parts history lesson and soap opera, and thoroughly engaging at all levels. Peter O'Toole plays Octavius/Augustus, heir to his doomed uncle Julius Caesar's command of the far-flung Roman empire. Surviving an assassination attempt and struck by news of the death of his old friend and ally, Agrippa (Ken Duken), in the same day, Octavius waxes nostalgic about his youthful exploits in Caesar's army (Benjamin Sadler plays the young Augustus in flashbacks) and his unprepared immersion in the deadly politics of the Mark Antony (Massimo Ghini) era. More immediate are Octavius' problems trying to stave off conspiracies by his wife Livia (Charlotte Rampling) to set up the emperor's stepson, Tiberius (Michele Bevilacqua), as heir, and talk his dutiful daughter Julia (Vittoria Belvedere) into a marriage she doesn't want. Roger Young (Jesus) directs this highly watchable costume drama, and O'Toole's golden presence makes the ancient intrigues tragically human. --Tom Keogh

M*A*S*H - Season Three (Collector's Edition)

M*A*S*H - Season Three (Collector's Edition) Review

The MASH ensemble had such great interaction during those first 3 wonderful seasons and I still get a feeling of dread when I see the final episode with Henry and Trapper coming on. I tried watching some of the following seasons but it just wasn't the same without Henry and Trap and then my favorite, Frank Burns left. I had only been an occasional viewer until that moment, but that ended it for me. Plus the show was no longer very funny. I still laugh out loud at the first 3 seasons but really have no use for the rest.

M*A*S*H - Season Three (Collector's Edition) Overview

In honoring M*A*S*H's third season with the prestigious Peabody Award, the judges praised this series "for the depth of its humor and the manner in which comedy is used to lift the spirit and, as well, to offer a profound statement on the nature of war." Contained on three discs, season three comprises several benchmark episodes illustrative of what the Peabody judges called "television of high purpose." In "Rainbow Bridge," Hawkeye (Alan Alda), Trapper (Wayne Rogers), Radar (Gary Burghoff), Klinger (Jamie Farr), and an opportunistic Frank Burns (Larry Linville) participate in a swap with the North Koreans of wounded POWs. In "The Consultant," Robert Alda (Alan's dad) guest stars as a visiting doctor who cracks under the pressure of operating so close to the front. And the shocking season finale, "Abyssinia, Henry," took a page from Mister Roberts and killed off commanding officer Henry Blake (McLean Stevenson), who was en route home.

M*A*S*H's sense of humor did not go AWOL. The season opener, "The General Flipped at Dawn," earned guest star Harry Morgan an Emmy nomination for his performance as a certifiable general and paved the way for Morgan to join the cast in season four. "Adam's Ribs" is a classic episode in which Hawkeye orders out to Chicago for a very special delivery of spare ribs. In "Iron Guts Kelly," the war's "greatest fighting general" gets a little too gung-ho and perishes in Margaret's (Loretta Swit) tent. Because of its wartime setting and life-and-death struggles, this is that rare sitcom that may actually play better without a laugh track, an option this set offers. To paraphrase the title of one episode, this was a full, rich season that offered each member of one of television's finest ensembles the opportunity to shine. But Alda, who was honored that year with a Golden Globe award, fully emerges as the series' star. --Donald Liebenson

Innocent Voices

Innocent Voices Review

I live in an area of the US with many immigrants from El Salvador. I have a childhood friend who disappeared in El Salvador in the 1970's. I know virtually nothing about the history of the country or the people, but through INNOCENT VOICES, I have learned much. I recognized many faces, not because I know the actors, but because I see from their faces the people who experienced the civil war of their time in their country. I feel naive about my limited historical knowledge, but I can address the filmmaking, which I think is superb. I often say that children are magic on-screen and they are so unpredictable and pliable with a good director. The children in this film (as well as the adults) are worth studying by young actors because they appear to lose themselves in their characters. The language spoken of course is Spanish with English subtitles that were very well done. The lush wooded locale was captured beautifully and the devastation caused by the armies was done by a first rate special effects team. The wardrobe was outstanding and set design very realistic. Mid-way through the film, I felt the pacing slow down a bit, but the film still held my interest throughout. The characters were very well done and full bodied, so many creating a strong impression. I consider this an historical film which brought to light a time which changed many lives and the landscape, so I now see survivors of the time from my more enlightened eyes. For a well made film that will motivate you to think about war, love, family, resistance and survival, try INNOCENT VOICES.

Andersonville

Andersonville Review

I have always been a fan of John Frankenheimer, and though his later efforts were not critically well-received, I believe it may be time for a reappraisal. I suggest Andersonville as a starting point.

I watched this film twice, before watching it again with Frankenheimer's commentary. It was like watching another movie. Listening to John (sadly, now deceased) discuss these young actors, and how he set up some of the shots -- many involving thousands of extras -- I came to deeply respect both John and this film.

Bear in mind that they had only sixty days to shoot this, and on a limited budget (and they lost several canisters of completed film and had to reassemble the cast and rebuild the set 9 months later!), and you come away deeply impressed with the artistry and efforts of all involved, particularly the costume and makeup folks who worked on this picture.

As John says, this film is not about war, but more about man's willingness to endure anything to survive. Several of the large-scene fight sequences are astonishing, as is the trial scene that vindicates and upholds the rule of law even in horrific conditions.

For me that is something that resonates and is instructive even today.

Zapatista

Zapatista Review

I could write a long review, but I won't. The day of the Zapatista uprising says it all. The day NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) came in to effect - some celebrated, these impoverished and brave indigenous people took up arms to make a point, force change, and make their voice heard.

What can you learn from men wearing black hoods to mask their identities, a fair bit.

People the world over have forgotten, there is no such thing as a free lunch. 'Free trade' is what I call - lipstick on a pig.

I recommend the following other DVDs: The Persuaders, Orwell Rolls in his Grave, Charcoal People, National Geographic Strange Days on Planet Earth, Life and Debt, a skeptical watching of Commanding Heights, and National Graphic's Taboo Season 1 and 2. The latter I recommend watching to realize that not everyone wants to live your lifestyle and people can have very different opinions on how to live. Then if you haven't, go travel abroad.

As for books - Native Wisdom for White Minds.

MASH (Season 8) DVD Review

Based on a Richard Hooker novel of the same name, was in 1970 as a mash movie from 20th Century Fox, before you publish to the widespread success as a revolutionary sitcom in the fall 1972nd The show brilliant integration of drama and comedy is one of the most popular shows in TV history, which ends with a passage of eleven series of prime time. The last series MASH, 1983, in the history of how the program with the broader public televisionhistory, beating out several SuperBowls and the fabled "Who Shot J.R." episode of Dallas. The sitcom is set in South Korea during American involvement in the Korea War (with M*A*S*H standing for "Mobile Army Surgical Hospital"). Buffered from the front lines by a mountain range and a minefield, the men and women of MASH were tasked with patching up wounded American soldiers. Unique to its Gender, body MASH was unusually high. World War II: Payoff in the Pacific

World War II: Payoff in the Pacific Review

The war in the Pacific has always been overshadowed by the war against Hitler in Europe, and it really should not be. I would have gladly chosen to take on the elite of the German Wehrmacht and S.S. before I would have signed on to take the war to Japanese soldiers. The Japanese were tough as nails; they gave no quarter and fought on long after most soldiers would have surrendered. They also enjoyed a home field advantage of sorts, as the American military had never fought a campaign against island chains full of jungles and the tropical diseases that thrive there. The story of America's war against Japan is really quite amazing and should be heralded as such. Much intense fighting took place between the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as this video makes clear.

Indeed, Payoff in the Pacific begins with the sneak attack on the Pacific fleet and takes the viewer all the way through the Japanese surrender. Long before the D-Day invasion of Normandy, American soldiers were storming beaches all across the Pacific. In the days and months following December 7,1941, Japan all but established its supremacy in the region. It would take time for the U.S. to rebuild the Pacific fleet and get new recruits ready to fight, but even in 1942 U.S. soldiers were fighting the Japanese in places such as Papua and the Solomon Islands. This video basically takes you through the American advance toward Japan, island by island, featuring impressive and telling footage of the battles - you don't get a lot of detail about each battle, but the big picture comes through loud and clear. At first, the Americans basically tried to hold back the Japanese advance, losing many islands in the process. As the new army took shape, however, the tide slowly began to turn. Long and deadly fights such as the battle for Guadalcanal (which took six months) evolved into shorter and less deadly battles as the U.S. forces began to go on the offensive. By summer 1944, the Americans were ready to take back the Philippines, and it is here that Japanese defeat became all but inevitable. A vicious two-day naval battle in the Gulf of Leyte essentially broke the Japanese navy's back, and by early 1945 the army had taken Okinawa (albeit with heavy losses) to land itself on the proverbial doorstep of Japan. It was at that time that the Enola Gay made her way into the history books with the dropping of an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. After Nagasaki fell prey to a second atomic bomb, the Japanese were compelled to surrender.

The video doesn't stop at the signing of surrender papers, however. It offers a significant glimpse at how quickly American troops went to work rebuilding the infrastructure of the nation they had just defeated. Not only did this pave the way for a new friendship between these two formerly antagonistic nations, it highlights the character of the men and women who made up the Greatest Generation of Americans. This video was released officially by the U.S. Army, but I don't consider it propagandistic - it may be one-sided in its approach, but this is an American film about an American victory.

Vietnamese Art: Shown is the war and its consequences in terms of colors

Dominated since the beginning of mankind, war, the interaction between groups of people because of different origins. This violent conflicts were being recorded in the respective art forms practiced by different groups or tribes. But art is not simply record the events, said events affects how people perceive and, in particular, plays an important role in world affairs.

Taking into account the political power of art, it isNot surprisingly, the 20th Century, characterized as much by two world wars and other armed conflicts is also an influx of an incredible amount of art. Much of it is the art of propaganda to unite the people under the pretense of a common cause. However, not the art of protest art, politicians, and probably also abundant. The political significance of art in the various wars will be manufactured or produced especially clear in the contrast between the art by American artistsSecond World War and the Vietnam War, that the artists who vent their political views in the wars of their times ".

While the differences in political systems and cultures, they are easy to identify if we change the artwork on the American and the Vietnam War, the similarity between the applicant and the war in Vietnam for more the two countries and will continue for the Society of influencing nations. Vietnam had to cope with these changes in an open and wentforward, but the United States has not been a complete closure. The Art of War in Vietnam, shows that the artists are connected behind the war, American artists are deeply saddened by the division in the United States and the associated uncertainty.

To the description of persons, especially women to better understand, Vietnamese art, he should know that in Vietnamese culture, the individual is important that I, as a group,Feature, the Communist leaders were able to build. In this system, the male members of the family were the leaders of the central government; paternal relatives were therefore even more important. Sun Ho Chi Minh was able to reap the fruits of his image of "Uncle Ho". The small role of women in Vietnamese society, which explains why most men have created Vietnamese art. Although the men the power they have in the family and women were to be as obedient, "women were considered, were notas the weaker sex, but strong and willful. "

The case of the colonial French there are many political changes resulted. But the French influence is not completely removed, as France had played an influential role in creating the first art school in Vietnam, the Ecole des Beaux-Arts d'Indochine (EBAI). In 1957 the Association of Vietnamese artists (Hoi Nghe When was Tao Hinh) noted: it was the birth to give, "a national artistic workmeet the needs of government propaganda. "

Follow the government's socialist principles, the artists in Vietnam appealed to closely observe the lives of ordinary people, peasants, miners and workers. This allows artists to the lives of ordinary people in the field of networks and show you what to turn inform and influence. Thus, the prevailing models of art on the farm, soldiers and workers were employed, and historical figures, heroes of the war andlegendary fighter for independence. Children are also represented in the work of the Vietnamese and American artists of the time.
